Fire team composition

Most likely the compliment of abilities that your fire team brings with them into the frontier for missions, or the arena for competitive play, will greatly influence the effectiveness of your team in combat. I've seen some ideas in different places about it, but not a direct topic. I want to know what the community thinks about fire team composition. “Will we need one of each class to be effective?” Or “Will there be enough overlap to mix-and-match the classes even in tough situations?” I would also like to hear some strategies about how you would use different fire team combinations.

  • I'm saying anything that isnt a 3 of a kind build is going to be good if everyone is all the same regardless of AWESOMEness they can't cover for those parties weaknesses

  • I think it won't matter what your composition in a fireteam is until a certain point in the game. For strikes (3 man coop), probably won't matter because it will be a quick 30 to 45 min activity with modest loot. It won't matter because most of the strike will be trash mobs and a final boss at the end (just look at the moon trailer). Remember, bungie wants to make this accessible for all players (MMO rpgs AND shooters) so this is where everyone can be what they want to be. For raids, the more I hear about it, the more I'm convinced that they work very similar to MMO raids in terms of difficulty and will only be available late in the game. In MMOs, raids are only allowed to be completed once per week and yield amazing loot if you can get good enough players to help you through the ordeal. They usually are 8-12 hours to complete, which means scheduled play dates are crucial for completion. Bosses alone take 5-10 mins average of non-stop fighting so ammunition/mana must be conserved to last the entire fight. Although with Destiny, it is more shooter oriented so it won't be as long as MMO raids are. However, the fact still remains that you must have a well rounded group of multiple talents to counter any situation that may arise. For example, you enter a Vex dominated raid with the Hive also being present. Now you would need a decent tank to handle the minotaurs and husks on the ground but there are a dozen harpies hovering near the ceiling with some wizards on high rises. You would need a couple of hunters to either help mop up the husks or snipe wizards/harpies from far away. Not to mention at least one radiance lock for healing and buffs. That is just one occasion, not even a boss fight! TL;DR "Will we need one of each class to be effective?" Yes and no depending on what you are planning to tackle. More difficult= more variety to handle "Will there be enough overlap to mix-and-match the classes even in tough situation?" Same as above.

  • I think there's going to be so much customisation within the classes it won't really matter if you have more than one in a fireteam.

  • i personally think that bungie has done a good job with the Classes, they have stated that it wont affect you play style by much. they mentioned that warlocks can still use the same heavy weapons as the titans and such, but i do think it would be nice to have one of each in your fire team. i Think that the Hunter should sit back with some sort of agility/stealth sort of armor and a sniper to support the other two. the titan up front being the tank that it is being closely followed by a warlock for any healing benefits and so the warlock can use some of its other awesome magic

    • IMO Hunters won't be really helpfull. My fireteam is going 2 Titans and a Warlock for maximum efficiency. We're sticking with this until we get more info on classes.

Ok I'll start the speculation here! I think that the three classes will be different enough to allow players the versatility of playstyle that Bungie has promised, but I don't think that each class will be able to fill every roll. So far we've seen the hunter, as a damage dealer CQB and ranged, the warlock, as heal/buffer and ranged damage dealer, and the titan, as a CQB damage dealer. We've aslo seen some sort of shield ability for the titan that I haven't heard a name to yet. (at 3:22 of vidoc 2 "out here in the wild") http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1OjUWw43co If you think about it it's not too hard to imagine a class like the warlock being able to have a variety of focuses that would allow a player to perform almost any role, because of space magic. It could easily be used as an umbrella explanation, but what about the other classes? It's not hard to imagine a warlock channeling his magical energies into himself to act like a tank for a bit and it's not hard to imagine the hunter using some super to buff his whole fire team instead of just himself. It's not hard to imagine a titan throwing some electric javelin for ranged damage dealing, but it doesn't seem likely that a titan will be able to heal his fire team like a warlock will be able to. I could see a titan keeping a medkit stashed away for emergencies or between battles, but probably not in the heat of a fire fight. This leads me to my point, which is that if you think hard enough about it almost ANY class could fill ANY role, but it's not likely because then all the classes would be basically the same. One could argue that every class being able to fill any role would allow guardians to team up with players of any class and have a functional fireteam, but is that what we want? I think the strength of choice is the distinction between our options. I believe that having to seek out an rely on friends who are a different class, who can fill roles that we ourselves could not, would bring more people together. In this way the different classes would be complimentary instead of inter-changeable. That being said, if we have to rely too much on team mates and other classes, then we as guardians would feel powerless on our own. We would be compelled to specialize in the things that other classes could not do in order to be desirable in a fire team. This is a classic problem that I have with some MMO's. Even though you have choices about how to level your character, the abilities aren't good enough for you to want to break the mold of what people would find useful in their group. Since Bungie wants everyone to feel like they have valid choices in front of them, the only solution I can see is to allow each class to fill a limited number of roles equally as well as another that can fill that role. For example: Hunter and Warlock have a focus/super for ranged damage dealing, but Titan should not. As awesome as I think it would be as a titan to throw some electric javelin and cause an explosion, I don't think that it would serve the distinctions between class choice if each class could do anything. This leaves us, predictably, in the middle where each role can be filled by two classes equally as well. As far as how this will be accomplished exactly I'm not sure, but I think that a formula like that would provide a balance versatility and validation among guardians in Destiny. Sorry for the long post. ^_^; Hope you enjoyed reading.
