I have to say CE. Whilst I love halo 2, if you weren't using the BR or duel-subs in matchmaking, you were doing it wrong. In CE all of the weapons seemed to fill a slightly different role. The AR was a good automatic weapon for mid to close range, and hit scan enabled you to place your shots where you wanted them a gave a fair skill gap. It was also the only halo where the pp served as a true weapon rather than a homing emp. Sniping required a fair amount of skill and was much more restricted to it's true niche. The needler was death incarnate for the inattentive. The shotty and SPNKR were true power weapons; rare and rewarding. The map designs at the time were revolutionary, well balanced, and beautiful. The one weapon I have heard sound criticism for was the M6. It's place in multiplayer is very arguable either way.

I also forgot you add that the plasma rifle was a beautiful gun for mid to long range fighting. Its shots moved very quickly but were dodge-able; They took down shields quickly which lent itself well to support as well as assault.
