I'd be fine with bandits or something, but why would any human in their right mind hate the thing responsible for any humans surviving?

The Darkness would not have come if the Traveler hadn't shown up on Mars. The Traveler and the Darkness are bitter enemies, and once the Traveler entered our solar system, the Darkness was soon to follow. Citizens could easily be resentful of the Traveler for bringing near-doom to their existence. Or perhaps the citizens of the Last City don't know this? Maybe you, the player, will discover the truth about the Traveler as you explore the world?

Why would Unitologists want to worship the Marker?
-
Because it exactly matches their religion's teachings. Hating the Traveler has nothing to do with religion, however.

Similar foncept, though. The Marker is the embodiment of an evil beyond human comprehension, and yet the Unitologists worship it (although I believe that's from a combination of subliminal influence and standard human ignorance). On the other side, the Traveller saved the remnants of humanity, and yet some people would, theoreticslly, hate it. Does that make sense?
