Game age ratings...

I'm curious. I have been playing violent video games since I was about 4/5. I'm level headed, pragmatic and I think about what may occur due to my actions with some sense of morality. Video games haven't really influenced me in a bad way. A games rating has never made me think 'I shouln't be playing this'. Let me cut to the point before I cut to a tangent... Do age ratings have any use other than making a game unavailable to buy in store if you cannot prove your age?

I'd argue it can act as a guideline to attentive parents. If an employee explains the rating system, or if the adult actually takes the time to look at the packaging for the game, they can judge if the game is suitable for their kid. A parent can pick up, say Halo, because it look kind of cartoony and less realistic and see it's M. They can also read what makes it M and compare it to another M rated game (like if their kid asked for GTA). Which is the less extreme M rated game? The parent can decide for themselves and judge whether or not the game is suitable for their kid. TL;DR It's a good guideline for parents.

      • Not really, because if someone wants it enough and can't buy it, they'll get someone els to

      • To shield tiny and often times impressionable children from being affected badly by mature, adult content. What a stupid thread.

Game ratings exist so parents don't sue retailers, developers, and publishers when they sees Little Billy decapitate someone in Gore Fetish 4.
Ok that title sounds more like a BDSM porn flick, but you see where I'm going.
Age ratings for video games serve the exact same purpose as age ratings for movies. This purpose is to basically be a warning label for both parents and children, as to give an extremely brief summary of the content within the game. The ESRB states: "The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) ratings provide concise and objective information about the content in video games and apps so consumers, especially parents, can make informed choices. ESRB ratings have three parts: Rating Categories suggest age appropriateness Content Descriptors indicate content that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern Interactive Elements inform about interactive aspects of a product, including users' ability to interact, the sharing of users' location with other users, or the fact that personal information may be shared with third parties"

          • I've been playing mature games since 4/5 too. I think it depends on your actual maturity level. There's people who just can't handle it, even as adults.
