I thought about everything you're saying, and I think there's an even more obvious solution. Why would you need to be able to upgrade from superior to exotic? It does make sense to be able to go from basic up to superior, but that's enough for it to be usable; remember, players can only carry one exotic. That means that everyone will be using superiors a lot, and your weapon/armor wouldn't be underpowered.
Another variation is also possible: it may be that players are feeling restricted by underpowered superior weaponry; in this case, I think Bungie should just make exotics no stronger than superiors. However, they will still be immediately recognizable by the unique abilities they possess.
In short, I think that tier ascension makes sense, but exotics should be only obtainable by loot drop. They need not be stronger than superiors, and cannot make superiors unusable, but their abilities must be exclusive.
Why would you need to be able to upgrade from superior to exotic?
As I mentioned in the main body of the thread, I feel that Exotic Ascension represents an experience that Destiny would otherwise lack, this idea of allowing your weapons and armor to take on these legendary traits as their owner grows in strength and power. Destiny would work perfectly fine without the feature, I just figure it's not terribly disruptive and seems like the sort of thing that would be appealing to many players so I thought it would be worth mentioning. Not to mention, acquiring an exotic through ascension opens up the possibillity for some really unique experiences as I allude to in the 5th post in the thread. In my mind, the difference between opening a treasure chest to find a new exotic versus opening a treasure chest to find a one time use blueprint which will allow you to ascend one of your superior weapons to the exotic tier is pretty arbitrary when you abstract the concepts, having both in the game leads to a larger variety of experiences.

Hmmm I guess it's kind of a matter of what exotics should represent. What a guardian has done or how experienced/powerful they are. I can't help thinking of month long grinds though when I read about upgrading weapons all the way to exotic It could work though
