This is an interesting idea, regarding advancing basic to common to superior, however I'm not sure I like the idea of being able to advance all the way to exotic. Being able to create them yourself I think diminishes the value (at least lore wise, if not effort wise) for those who find them as rare loot. I understand that you suggest requiring rare components and possibly blueprints, but I think finding an exotic hand cannon would feel a lot better than just finding the blueprint for one. maybe blueprints would work for another class of weapons, but I think exotics should stay purely as rare loot.

I still feel that there could still be an element of lore to the ascended exotics. Imagine something along the lines of "The Exo of the Venus Colony F3-291 used a special type of burning shotgun to defend their home from invaders, they are gone and so is their weapon line, but the secrets of have to create them have been peddled amongst information brokers for a high price..." As long as the blueprints don't become something that allows you to mass produce that certain exotic, I think it could work just fine from a lore perspective. Amusingly enough, the thread I'm currently writing deals with Exotic Exclusivity, so I think I'll save some of the "effort" stuff for that.

Cool. I'm still not really sold on those weapons being classified as exotic, but I will definitely look forward to you next post. I guess in the end what it really comes down to making sure that both looted weapons and player-modded weapons fit, both from a lore and gameplay/viability standpoint. I guess one of my biggest concerns is that if you can create exotic weapons on par with those dropped as rare loot, more people will be running around with exotic weapons they modded themselves than ones they picked up. If I can build a hand-cannon that is on par with Thorn, for example, I would likely choose to use it over Thorn, even if I also have Thorn in my inventory, because I modded mine to be exactly what I want. I think many other people would do the same. If everyone uses exotified versions of mundane gear (for that reason or another), that defeats the purpose of the looted exotics, other than as a trophy on your wall.

I agree that the common to superior is cool, but everyone having the ability to make their guns exotic would GREATLY diminish the value. The whole thing about them is that they already have a story, and even though it would be cool to make that story, I think it would end up being more of a grind just to get all your weapons top tier.
