Then you're one of us: the good guys, the last bastion of sanity in a diseased world. We are the Rorschachs staring down at the mindless sheeple who amble through the streets of social media, infected with a deeply disturbing desire to share things with their friends and connect with each other. That's what the internet taught me, at least. Facebook is a way to connect with new people in your life and keep in touch with old ones. That's the main product that Facebook sells, and they've built a massive amount of infrastructure around it to bring as much people and content to the website, make it easier for people to find stuff they care about, and put the site on as many devices as possible. As far as making money goes, companies that advertise on Facebook can target their ads effectively by looking at user information: the things we've marked as our interests, our age and sex, our activity and people we talk to, etc. Facebook has repeatedly come under fire for a lack of transparency due to how much information they collect and how much they sell to companies; the massive amount of data they have on users also makes them a perfect partner for government surveillance programs.

  • this is why the short time I had facebook like 7 years ago I barely had any personal info ... then I terminated my account and never looked back. If facebook were to have any info from me it would be 7+ years old and maybe 1 or two pics of me and thats it. I never shared much info. I don't trust sites and will never use my real name on the internet again. When sites require a real name (not for billing purposes of course) and you can't make up a fantasy name (since it requires a real life name as opposed to something made up) I make a fake one. It's all deception and lies on my end so if any prying eyes think they've got some juicy info on me and where I live they will be highly disappointed to find out Susie Q doesn't live in Montana. Oh and btw, Susie isn't my real name and I don't live in Montana .... or do I? =)

Other than what he's said, nothing really. I have one, but I never get on it. It's not the bane of my existence, there's just nothing really special about it in general. I hop on occasionally to get in touch with a friend, but that's about it. Honestly, Facebook or not, your internet habits are being tracked. It doesn't matter where I go, there's always ads that are freakishly relevant to the stuff I look at and buy, just about everyone's selling your information. It's pretty disturbing, but that's the internet today. Disturbing.

  • Oddly enough, you're the only member other than either of us to point this out.

Facebook is a new way of communicating, or something that makes communication way easier. People have been concerned that users are spending too much time sharing stuff and chatting on Facebook, rather than doing it face-to-face. That level of accessibility also means people *can* share pretty much anything, no matter how meaningless it might actually be. The openness allows us to make Facebook friends out of people we might not really be "friends" with, and being able to discover people easier means we can discover how dumb people can be sometimes. Facebook has also spawned its own culture and memes and trends. Like any kind of tech, it's all about how you use it. When I graduated high school, Facebook gave me a way to effortlessly keep up with my friends who went all around the country. I wouldn't be able to call them all every day, but I could see what they were up to and have little chats quickly. When I joined a new club or sport or went to a party, I could add the people I met to learn a little more about them and help build those relationships. I think that's useful stuff. A lot of the problems that people have with Facebook, mainly that stupid stuff gets posted on their News Feed, seems to have more to do with their actual circle of friends than the site itself.
