I believe in God because of a near-death experience that occurred when I was about two years old. I could tell the full story if you like, but for now I'll just list the main points of interest: - Should have drowned because I couldn't swim. - Grandma found me several meters from the water's edge. - Nobody around who could have saved me. If there weren't a God, I would have died 15 years ago. That's why nobody will ever be able to convince me that there isn't a higher power of some kind.

  • Could you tell me the full story if it's not to much trouble? I'm interested :P

  • I was two years old at the time. My siblings and I were staying at my grandparents' house (which was just down the road from our house) because my mom was repainting the interior of our house and the fumes created by the paint were known to be potentially harmful to small children. At my grandparents' house, my grandpa was repairing the roof after a tornado or hurricane (don't remember which), and my grandma was looking after my three siblings and I. However, my grandma was also helping my grandpa fix the roof from here to there. While she was doing this, she left the backdoor open and I found my way outside while she wasn't watching me. She later discovered that I was missing, and began searching for me throughout the house. After she realized that I had gotten outside, she began to search the large amount of land around the house. Seeing as there was a lot of area to cover, she got my grandpa to help her look for me. After about 10 minutes of searching, they became frantic and called my mom over as well. It was about 15 to 20 minutes after that before my grandma had finally found me in the neighbor's backyard. More precisely, she found me several feet from the water's edge of the neighbor's small lake/pond. She said that I was soaked from head to toe, which suggests that I had been fully submerged at some point. Being only two, I couldn't have possibly swam out and climbed up the steep slope at the water's edge. However, there was nobody around who could've saved me. That's the story. It is for that reason, that I will never doubt the existence of a higher power of some sort.

  • No other explanation is reasonable.

Really, so if a 2-year old gets into water they are 100% guaranteed to drown from it? I have had several cousins about that age and they were all capable of keeping their head above the water in a river. I wouldn't trust them to get into the water alone but after several years there's never been an incident where they risked drowning despite getting soaked head to toe. That part is completely plausible to me. Plus from the position you were found in you presumably had your head above the water so the point about being totally submerged comes from your Grandmother's guess. In fact, since I doubt you could remember the incident yourself your entire account of the incident comes from your Grandmother's memory of what must have been an very emotional event, which I would consider a very unreliable source.

  • Hmm, interesting :P I don't know exactly what to think of that story, although it does make me ask questions. still I can see how, from a first person perspective it would make you believe. are you part of a particular religion?

  • The only religion I know much of anything about is Christianity. So that's my affiliation. But I don't care to specify among Baptist or any of those other specific branches. I think it's irrelevant.

  • You'd be surprised by the diversity of denominations, actually. I'd recommend doing some research if you haven't already.
