- TESO is out of the running. Critics aren't sold on it.
- Watchdogs some how managed to dehype themselves.
- Titanfall.... Is it just me or do critics tend to not give GOTY to Microsoft Exclusive titles? Unless it's a xbox-centric publication, of course. Like there is some unspoken rule?
- Same thing for AAA IPs with little-to-no emphasis on "campaign". I swear there is an unspoken rule among critics that GOTY has to go to a single-player game. Anyone else notice this pattern?
I honestly think GOTY is up for grabs. So far there is not a clear cut "winner".

Left 4 dead was game of the year, correct me if i'm wrong but i believe it was a xbox 360 & PC exclusive.

Its just an extreme rarity when it actually occurs. I mean how long has it been since L4D won?

Critics weren't sold on the starting areas for ESO. Which are now optional BTW. Every critical review I've seen on ESO past the starting zones has been positive. However... 1. MMOs don't win GOTY. They rarely even get proper reviews. 2. Too many people are judging the game by its subscription (even thought its probably a better model for them) instead of content So yeah, ESO was never in the running. Titanfall has been getting a mixed bag of reviews. Top notch gameplay- severe lack of longevity. So doubtful for GOTY. Watch Dogs should've been a next-gen only release, but since it is going to current gen too, they had to make adjustments which lost it some hype. I don't even think Destiny will win GOTY to be honest. Too much of an online component. It will depend on how story-centric the game is. If it doesn't have a good main storyline, it won't be GOTY no matter how good the other stuff in the game is. To me, Game of the Year = Best Story of the Year.
To me, Game of the Year = Best Story of the Year.
Yep. That's general how it goes from a critical standpoint as well.

That's kinda what I was referring to, but that's okay. We are on the same page. I still think Watch Dogs has potential. It'll depend on the storyline. So will The Order: 1886 and Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor. How I think critics choose GOTY now: 1. Is it an MMO? (If so, no GOTY) 2. It is an annual or bi-annual sequel? (If so, no GOTY) 3. Does the majority of the time played occur in online competitive multiplayer? (If so, no GOTY) 4. If it meets all this criteria- Does it have a good storyline? (If so, yes to GOTY)
