I've got to participate in a debate about American intervention tomorrow, and I was hoping to get perspective. It was a last-minute assignment that nobody was really prepared for. Obviously I won't use any arguments verbatim, I just want to get a discussion going.
So, what is your stance on America intervening in Ukraine?

2 RepliesMy opinion is no, as the situation in the Ukraine is not bad enough to warrant direct intervention. It's not worth the tension with Russia, it's not widespread, and I'm not convinced the Ukrainian people want our help anyways. At this point I'd like to address some common issues that always come up in situations such as these:
Why is it always America who intervenes?
Because America is one of very few countries who have the ability to do so. America has a large enough and well-organized enough military to deploy anywhere, any situation, any time. We are nearly alone in such ability, and although I agree our motives can sometimes be questionable, I'd rather it'd be us than most other.
Why is the rest of the worlds problems our problem? It always is. I'm fine with aid but do not send more of our soldiers to their deaths.
Because we currently live in the most interconnected world that there is. Somebody else's problem affects ourselves as well. Looking at the situation in the Ukraine right now, even at the most basic level it's not just about the Ukraine, it's about two much larger governing bodies (The EU and Russia) and the people of Ukraine's views on both bodies. And in involving Russia or the EU, the larger geopolitical sphere is involved to some degree as well.
The US should stop being the police of the world. That's what the UN was created for.
All things considered, the UN is inefficient and too weighed down by Global Politics to get things done. I'm much in agreement that the UN should be doing these things, but currently it is not (in my opinion) capable of doing so.

WW3 is my stance, no -blam!-ing way Russia would allow US troops to meddle in the Ukraine. At least for military intervention. Otherwise there is not much America can do on the diplomatic side that they are not already doing.

I really like that picture. OT: The U.S. should not intervene. This is a revolt, not a civil war. This is a protest, not a revolution. This is foreign soil, not American. This is political, not militant. This is an issue of economics, not terror. This is for the Ukraine people, not the American.

Edited by Indominus: 2/25/2014 5:00:30 AMThe US shouldn't intervene. It is not up to us in deciding what is better for the good of this country. It seems to be panning out without our help and we need to stop acting like world police.

Unlikely to happen.
-
don't it's a waste of time when we could go to war with mexico and take it over.
-
My stance? Stay out of the Ukraine.
-
No need i think it is mostly under control now

1 ReplyAnd so U.S imperialism continues...I still like this country doe
-
We have absolutely no reason to intervene in Ukraine. Why would we?
-
I think America should keep it's nose out of European affairs, the government clearly doesn't like Europe so why should it get involved? I mean it's got to the point that it's trying to dictate Britain's membership, how about bugger off.

We should focus on North Korea.
-
If any country should respect civilians when they lash out at a government they don't like, it should be the US.
-
The US has no business going in there, at least with a military. Humanitarian relief isn't even really needed. The US doesn't need to get involved any more than it already is. Let the rest of the countries of Europe handle it.

Edited by Infiltrat0rN7: 2/24/2014 5:03:58 AMJust put sanctions on Party of Region members. This is Ukraines own fight, also the situation is cooling down now, new elections are being held soon. The President resigned/fled and Kyiv is coming back to a peaceful state.

Not our problem. It really is that simple. We can't police the whole world.

Depends on if they have any oil.
I kid
If US wants to ofeert humanitarian aid then maybe but military no that will only make things worse.
-
Argue for Mexican intervention in Ukraine.

Edited by diggnURgrave: 2/24/2014 3:38:01 AMLet them sort out their own issues, US intervention would cause problems.
-
Humanitarian works and help should be offered. Anything on the militaristic side of things will only stir up trouble.

4 RepliesAmerica, bugger off. This is between us Europeans and the Russians, Ukraine doesn't need the US complicating things, it would be as disastrous as the Chinese interfering in Japan.
