The lower your bodyfat is, the more definition your abs will have. They'll really pop the lower you are. Eating under your maintenance will make you lose weight/bodyfat. On another note, if you want to build them bigger, eating a surplus and doing exercises like front squats and deadlifts will build em up. For some isolation you can do hanging leg raises, or get an ab wheel and try that out too! Not a big fan of sit ups or crunches.
Whenever you feel like you're too thin for your own liking, you can start eating a surplus again to prevent muscle loss and start gaining some! Really depends on your preference of how you want to look, and how much of a deficit in calories you eat. Having really low calories can make you lose muscle quick(bad)
