And most of you don't know the Sun orbits the black hole at the center of the galaxy.

I do. But then again I always loved astronomy and anything about space.

If Winy saw this subthread, his head would explode.
-
I did know that.

I did

Some people dont understand how when you look at something 12 million light years away that you are seeing what it looked like 12 million years ago
-
I did too

Didn't the universe expand so much in the beginning that it was faster than the speed of light? And since nothing can go fast than the speed of light (other then empty space itself) that the law of physics wouldn't have even been able to go over the vast distance in time that for awhile time itself as well as everything else in the universe would not move?
-
Iv not heard that before, but im not sure. Im certain that nothing can go faster than light

Edited by Unique ID: 2/15/2014 9:50:13 AMEmpty space man it is nothing look it up. Here's a quote from Michio Kaku "One frequent question I get is whether we can break the light barrier—because unless we can break the light barrier, the distant stars will always be unreachable. Most textbooks say that nothing can go faster than light, but that statement actually should be qualified: The answer is yes, you can break the light barrier, but not in the way we see in the movies. There are, in fact, several ways to travel faster than light: 1. The Big Bang itself expanded much faster than the speed of light. But this only means that "nothing can go faster than light." Since nothing is just empty space or vacuum, it can expand faster than light speed since no material object is breaking the light barrier. Therefore, empty space can certainly expand faster than light."

When you put it like that it does seem to make sense

Spacetime is not "nothing". It isn't nothing considering it can be warped and bent.

Yes, but I think he was trying to make it simple to understand.

Edited by Unique ID: 2/15/2014 9:19:29 AMAswell as a week is not after the seven days of creation. A week is based off of the Sun,Saturn,Moon,Mercury,Jupiter,Venus,Mars. Just thought i'd throw that in for the f***s of it.
-
Same as how you see the Sun as it was 8 minutes ago.

Do you know what is meant by the term 'red shifted'? I dont think many people know this but i have a feeling you do
-
I do as well...
-
Good for you
-
I just wanted to feel smart...
-
You probably are, i dont think many people know what it is.
-
Edited by Unique ID: 2/15/2014 9:24:56 AMIsn't it when light is moving away from you so it appears reddish? I think, i've never taken physics so I only know what I taught myself.
-
Its when an object is moving away at such high speeds that the electromagnetic radiation waves it gives off are stretched towards the red end of the spectrum so the object appears redish. Blue shifted is when an object is moving towards you. We know that the universe is expanding because almost all of the stars, galaxies, ect are red shifted.

Edited by Unique ID: 2/15/2014 9:36:34 AMIt's cool to see someone else who knows this stuff. I feel so alone. :D I'm sure you know all about M-Theory, strings, planet formation and whatever other random physics I can pull out of my...
-
I dont really know any thing about M or string theory, iv never looked in to it. I like to think i know more than the average person though, alot of it is interesting so im going to take physics as A level (i live in England) hope i can handle it
-
I'm sure you will do fine just make sure you know the math before hand.
-
I know
