If you haven't seen the movie, don't read this:
I thought the introduction of the kid and Will Ferrell was hilarious, but I think it would have been better as a quick gag, rather than the crux of the entire plot. It kinda defeated the wonder of the story.

I like how you put a spoiler warning inside of a spoiler warning.

Just in case, because a lot of people tend to use spoiler tags just to separate their thoughts. I really don't want to ruin the surprise for anyone.

this twist everyone's talking about seems fairly intense. [restrains from reading any spoilers]

You'll feel dumb for not catching it. I hate that it's even called a twist.

...It's a "twist"?... I figured that's how it worked from the start.
I mean, early on, Emmet even mentions "the man upstairs" and creates a giant hand. At that point, it was pretty clear that someone was controlling the characters. It was reminiscent of this.

I think the notion that there was a person building the set was pretty apparent, since it was dealing with Legos after all. The real "twist" was that it was the son of the President Business character, which filled in all the gaps in character development, such as why he was so bent on gluing the universe.
The foreshadowing is pretty obvious when you look back.
