law is designed to stop minors being taken advantage of, not to stop them posting theirselves. By all means arrest anybody else with the images, but the girl who took them? Surely she can take photos of herself without prosecution

No, in this case she's a distributor of child pornography. Also, it's a lot harder to catch those that download the pics, as there could be thousands and not every one is in the US or can be proven to know that the girl is underage.
-
Can't you get in trouble for simply viewing the stuff?
-
Yeah. Using your eyes on certain things is illegal in these wonderful and modern times. Cp is the only type of information I can think of that is illegal. Crazy right?
-
When has proximity ever stopped the US? I understand that letter of the law she is a distributor, but she clearly sent pictures of herself to "male acquaintances" without being pressured. She is also being charged with felony possession of child pornography, but the child in question is herself, and being naked in not necessarily pornographic material.

Delta it is the same in the UK. Child porn is a picture of anybody under the age of 18 regardless that the age of consent is 16, myself I think the CP and Age of consent should be level with each other and not having 2 random numbers that cause confusion like this.

Her picture was probably copied like a thousand times.
