Lets just say that if the school could physically attack me, I would have little to no qualms about burning it to the ground ^_^ in self defense, of course. Candy below (not really)
The system itself does many things to circumvent the one thing its supposed to facilitate, understanding. More irksome is that everyone buys into it and tolerates it (including me) and disregards suggestions to change it! It makes me completely and eternally pissed off. I could go on...
• I'll give one answer before I hit the hay
Lecturing, in my opinion, is one of the worst ways to educate people. Regulating attention towards something you passively participate in (if you participate at all) "bores" the hypothalamus region of the brain (regulating attention). The mind starts wandering after five minutes of conventional lecture. The teacher is the only one actively sharing the knowledge with you. One could argue that since they reaffirm the information in their mind and the student retains a relatively small portion of it, they get more out of the experience than the student does. Besides, learning in this way seems to work well for small part of the population, perhaps the ones who can cope the most with banality (that's a joke I make with myself just for irony's sake)? The lecture, unless led by a compelling teacher (which are in short supply) doesn't make us love learning which is the quintessential piece of education! You have to make the option more available for students to love learning, goddammit! Furthermore, this system rewards those who can cope with the system rife with imperfections, and shuns out millions of people from aspiring to higher goals because the education system has ruled them academically inferior. Education, as it is now, has the audacity to tell people they are inferior to others when it stands inferior to other education programs in different areas of the world and doesn't let people realize any more potential than what the system itself espouses! Now I realize I've drifted off topic a little, bringing it back in. I believe lectures are one facet of an ugly portrait when it comes to school here characterizing the hypocrisy and negligence evident in a flawed system.
• Wait. Sorry. Wouldn't attention span affect the thalamus because it regulates the information going to the cerebrum? I'm only in basic anatomy so maybe you could clarify.

 • I only did some research over the summer into the brain, trying to ascertain what was ideal for learning. The project didn't work out very well (variables like you wouldn't believe!), but I remember a few things from it. Technically, both systems, the brainstem, and the cerebral cortex all have nerve fibers functioning in the RAS system, but it is indeed the Thalamus which plays the largest role when it comes to awareness of surrounding, not the Hypothalamus. Thank you for catching that!

 • No problem. Thanks for clarifying. I'm in human anatomy in high school and we just got done with the brain, which is one of my interests. I wasn't sure so that is why I asked for clarification. I plan on being a neurosurgeon so small details like this might be important, but not right now because I'm sure it will be drilled into me later in school.

 • Apparently my message was too long to be contained in one. I'll try to remember the end...
portrait characterizing the hypocrisy and negligence evident in an imperfect system
