Halo 2... Nostalgia or Not?

With the recent Halo 2 Anniversary rumors I've seen the "nostalgic" word being tossed around quite frequently. I know many people like to bring up nostalgia as a reason that people want something to return. Saying that it'll never be the same and such(which it wouldn't, it never could). Basically, everyone that doesn't care or doesn't want Halo 2 to return calls all of the Halo 2 fans nostalgic fanboys. Could they be something more than that though? Is it possible that people may still enjoy Halo 2 over basically any modern game? Is it really just all nostalgia? The way I look at it is I STILL play Halo 2. I love going back and doing glitches on splitscreen on the 360 or original xbox. I play halo 2 on the PC. I play Halo 2 on XBC from time to time. I've even done the campaign several times on both platforms within the past few years. I would just love to have consistent online Halo 2 back with enough population to find BTB games. Now let's look at what nostalgia really is. Nostalgia is looking back at something with rose tinted glasses. It's looking back and realizing that a game and the time it was in was fun but things have changed and the game has aged. Their would be essentially no way that the game or a remake of it could ever hold your attention. I would find that to be a very hard thing for me to avoid playing H2A every single day for at least a year straight. Maybe missing a stray day here or their. It's one of the very few exceptions though. A good example of nostalgia for me is Goldeneye 007 and it's not because the remake was trash. Goldeneye 007 was fun for it's time but it certainly lost it's luster. I'm not going to say that I couldn't go back and play it with some friends and have some fun. I would definitely be able to have fun. I just wouldn't be able to have nearly as fun as I did back in the day. The fun would also start to wear off quite quickly. I know when I speak for myself that a Halo 2 remake would be more than a filler game that I set down after playing for a week. I would play it very consistently like it was a brand new game. So what do you think about the subject? Do you think that too many people just assume that you couldn't have a good time with a Halo 2 remake? Do you think that people just don't understand that sometimes it isn't all about nostalgia? I'm just curious to know if any other true Halo 2 fans are bugged by this subject?

  • I wouldn't play any other game if Halo 2 multiplayer makes a comeback.

    • I experienced Halo 2 for the first time about a year and a half ago, and I enjoy it. Heck, it became one of my favorite Halo games.

People say I have nostalgia googles all the time with Halo 3 ... yet I play halo 3 weekly still lol People can scream 'nostalgia' all they want the same way derps scream 'adapt' to those who didn't like Reach/4. Doesn't change the fact some people like/dislike certain games. Unfortunately some people live in denial that older games could possibly be better than some modern ones. Newer does NOT always mean better ... some people think this though that a new game = 100% always better than it's predecessor which is completely stupid.

I just chalk it up to developers failing to capture the sense of adventure in gaming in new titles thanks in part to how Hollywood works. You'll notice how it's Diehard 5 and COD 4 now simply because large amounts of money are on the line and investors and the machinery of supply and demand that gets such entertainment to your tv depends on a return of profit or breaking even if all else fails. Somewhere in Microsoft when Halo 4 died somebody looked at Franky and said you better get your shit together and save this mess or we'll find someone else who can. Book deals and movie deals that we're long ago hammered out and signed into production we're coming and if Halo was being rejected by its core base then someone was going to get a bat across the knees in the parking structure. You could almost hear the somber board meeting where they came up with the fire control method. One Halo 2 is beloved by the Core now. Most likely it was being worked on as a pet project here and there... anyways after Anniversary was launched somebody was drawing or writing long after the fact on H2A. Okay that will get the core happy and reengaged with Halo. Now everyone we need the kitchen sink to save Halo 5. So they hired a bunch of MLG pros and a new art director, and Steven Speilberg, buuuutttt somebody is clinging to the writer and Halo 4ish direction of Sarah Palmer...so good luck Halo 5. You're going to need Halo 2 and Speilberg pulling a Saving Private Ryan in space to remind people why they like Halo in a big way come 2015.

    • H2 was glitchy as -blam!- and the ugliest Halo game ever, it also had a long, tedious and unmemorable campaign. It's not as good as people say it is.

it's funny because some of the people i personally see on here calling halo 2 fans "only in it for the nostalgia" turn around and start praising halo 3. i'm definitely not the greatest fan of halo 2 myself [though i don't dislike it], and you'd have to be crazy to assert that it was flawless. but saying that all halo 2 fans are just nostalgic is stupid. -your local halo ce fan

      • As amazing as Halo 2 was before, this is just a desperate move to cash in.

          • i agree alot with the OP. I still have my n64 and on a rare occasion play Goldeneye with some buds. Its nothing like playing it back when it was released. Halo2A i expect will be much the same. I still have friends on XBL that I played the original with, but those days have long past. Like Goldeneye, the advances in FPS games has left Halo2 behind. I think much of the nostalgia is related to the fact that it was the first major online multiplayer experience for people who dont play on PCs. That and their online features were still better than most halos since

          • I had a lot more fun memories on Halo2 than three, but that might be due to the fact that i was still in school when Halo2 came out so i could afford to play mindlessly during the summer. Granted there was a lot of bad memories (standbyers/modders/no AR). I've been having nostalgia to the point where i even played some more halo 4.
