Well Bungie sort of shot itself in the foot during 2013. People were very interested after the GDC. Then the trailer confirmed the GDC and then the E3 gave everyone this wonderful glimpse into the painting.
Then.... Nothing. Just a focus on PVP and not even good one. The exploration aspect never manifested and it's been pretty lackluster on updates for a new IP.
The forums goto hell thanks to Offtopic hating the fact that mods are doing nothing so they decide to push them to adopt normal forum moderation. But by then it's too late. The Destiny forum has been basically ransacked by troll posts. Driving off conversation.
Then the RPG element isn't even worth discussion thanks in part to the former Halo fan base despising anything that takes away from Halo. So it's this constant give and take from new users wanting to explore a new Ip to older users wanting the same experience that secured them as Bungie fans.
So it's a big cluster -blam!- as usual, but things are starting to turn around. Lately there has been some substantive discussion and better info like the Game Informer articles are starting to take hold in the forums thanks in part to the moderation starting to be enforced and the lid coming off Destiny slowly in 2014.
Hopefully Bungie will come out swinging with another GDC presentation and a powerful E3 performance in the next few months. 2013 will be a forgotten shadow two hours into the Beta.
But they need to get going on getting that Hype train ratcheted up.

Edited by Danteburning: 1/27/2014 6:59:58 PMI have a slightly different opinion: Old Halo gamer, and I played obsessively. I adore the Halo IP. I'm MORE excited for Destiny. Not less. And certainly not for the same thing. I suspect there are plenty like me. And second, Destiny is 8 months away from release. There's still GDC and E3, as well as a ton of other ways they could choose to really start revealing Destiny's chops. Whether at conferences or their own events (I realize you mentioned those, but I don't think you give their marketing enough credit haha). In the meantime, their fan base has grown, and will only continue to do so as they reveal more approaching the release date. Teasers in this case, I believe, have been highly effective. Just my two cents. :)

Are you a Halo 2 player ? I find H2s are more adaptive to new experiences than H3 players. Regardless, maybe it's my cynicism speaking but as more and more of the RPG elements start to surface on how it effects the PVP I believe you'll see Destiny pretty much become a secondary Reach forum where the former fan base goes all out to shame those who actually enjoy space magic and degrade them for it.

Diehard Halo 3 fans (Halo 3 Classicist) tend to have opinions about as flexible as reinforced concrete. I genuinely believe that Destiny's future core fanbase will treat Destiny's sandbox and mechanics as a completely different game. Bungie has finally started putting emphasis on that message, and based on my experiences on the Team Beyond's website, the message is starting to drive home. Where as 6 months ago, the general vibe may have been "Halo or bust", people are coming around. People are realizing Destiny doesn't have to be Halo to be successful or enjoyable. Our job, as the "Vanguard" to what will eventually be the Destiny community. Is to positively encourage that message, get people to take off their Halo-blinders, and remind people that Destiny is a different game.... and it's suppose to be.

I am! Lol And you may be right. There's always going to be the naysayers and trolls trying to stir up trouble and angrily voicing their discontent. But I think even they will probably be satisfied. I doubt that Bungie would have PVP that allowed too much of the RPG element to take over. PVP has always been balanced. I imagine the extent of the RPG will be primarily cosmetic. I could be wrong, but that's my thought on it anyways. Besides. Anyone who doesn't like space magic is a chump anyway. Hahaha
