I think it does have something to do with the increasing societal pressures on young people.

You serious? What pressures? These kids today have no idea what pressure is.
-
Yes. Whether you want to accept it or not, young people today do have more pressure on them to succeed than young people from before. It wasn't too long ago when just a diploma was enough to get you a decent living to own a house and support a family and be happy. These days, young people need to have higher degrees (most of which are useless, unless you study something in math, science, computers, etc.), large networks of people just to get a job anywhere (as often as I tried, I could not get a job anywhere while I was in high school, and didn't find my current job until almost two years ago now), and they now compete with most high/decent paying jobs internationally instead of just locally or within the same state. There are many other things I probably forgot to list, and I also don't feel like making too long of a post. So, these are just some things off the top of my head.
-
So getting a job? Thats why people are more stressed and its harder to be a kid now? Newsflash brother, its ALWAYS been hard to get a job.
-
Jobs, yes. But also major (and tedious) hoops they have to jump through these days just to do anything. These days: Don't know anyone super important? You're screwed. Didn't waste years of your life and put yourself in crippling debt for a fancy piece of paper that says you're smart? Oh well, better luck next time. You aren't a bumbling idiot who obviously tries too hard to impress people? You must be anti social, we don't want you. Sure, it's always hard to get a job, but it shouldn't be so hard to the point of being impossible to where you can only get one if you do one of the above things I listed. Out of high school, I couldn't even get hired at a freakin' McDonald's! I went back a few weeks after my interviews and I see idiots working there who couldn't even use the damn ordering machines properly, and spoke as if they had some kind of mental retardation or something. If you make young people jump through numerous, tedious hoops and make it near impossible to just get a basic job, they're going to feel pressured to succeed (which many are trying), and very stressed. Society demands a lot more from young people these days than ever before. Everyone wants to strive to meet them. But most are still having trouble just getting their foot in the door.

Increasing and harder school work, ever present peer pressure thanks to social media, international competition, economy still unstable, high house prices, universities/employes wanting higher grades, more experience and talents.
-
You've got to be kidding me. That's pressure? HAHAHHAHA
-
Collectively applied and combined with other tragedies of normal life, it can be very stressful, especially for younger people/kids
-
Or the answer is that today's kids are too soft.
-
Oh, you are so tough aren't you? Pissing people of on a forum
-
Pissing people off? Sorry, but yes today's kids ARE soft.
-
Again, what makes you think yesterdays were tougher?
-
Today we have a "everyone gets a trophy" mentality in life. No kids are allowed to have their feelings hurt because people think it would lead to low self esteem. Everyone is treated as a prince.
-
No we don't, least not where I live.
-
Sure is.
-
I think this is definitely a factor.
-
It certainly is.
-
It really is. I feel it sometimes, with my friends always talking about all their school stuff and whatnot, and yet here I am just working, not really looking to go to school. All the pressure of having to get some kind of degree, and then hoping you can find a job in the field you studied must be tough. Which is why I'm looking to make my own way in life, which doesn't require crippling debt, it's easy on the mind, and I'll get to do something I love with my friends and family.
-
Sounds cool, what do you work as?
-
Right now I work as a quality control person at a warehouse with my brother in law. But I've been saving up some money so I can buy a good camera and any other equipment I may need to get into making my own short movies. My step brother and I already have some good ideas with us two and his friends. It's something I've been wanting to do for the longest time, just never had the money to get started, until now.
-
Sounds like fun, also something Im interested in. :)
-
You should really try and get started if you're able to. I honestly can't wait until I have everything I need.
