Armed British police to wear camera's
Firearms officers are to wear video cameras in an attempt to be "more open" following the death of Mark Duggan, the Met Police Commissioner has said. Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe admitted the force must "do more to build trust" after an inquest jury found the 29-year-old was lawfully killed. Mr Duggan was shot dead by police in August 2011 in Tottenham, north London. Sir Bernard will meet community leaders in Haringey to discuss how "confidence" in the Met can be improved. The family of Mr Duggan reacted with anger after the jury concluded by a majority of eight to two that he was lawfully killed by officers. Mr Duggan, whose death sparked protests that descended into rioting and looting across London and spread to other parts of England, was shot when police stopped a taxi he was travelling in. "First of all, I want our officers to be able to be more open when it comes to the investigations that follow these events. "In pursuance of that we're going to ask them to wear video cameras, so that we can record this type of incident, and I'm going to meet many people from across London, leaders from the Haringey community, to see what we need to do to work together to improve the confidence in the Met for those members of society who may feel that this has damaged their confidence in any way."
I feel America could take a look at the results of this and decide to do it themselves since most of the police are armed there and it would help curb the abuse. Overall I think this is a good idea, maybe it'll expand to non armed police.

I've always thought it was a good idea to have body cameras on cops because it would help keep each party accountable. Someone I know was wrongly accused of being a racist cop/ racist bastard for pepper spraying someone who happened to be African-American because he was resisting arrest. Edit: Nice bump whoever.

That seems like a good idea, but I don't see what's to stop the police officers from not using the cameras, or wiping them if they record themselves being abusive. EDIT: Ah, this was necrod. Ok then.

  • Regarding my earlier post, apparently the other equipment is already a cost to the department. I asked my cop friend about it. He also told me that his department just did bought cameras for each officer to wear. Looks like it's happening in the states then, too.

    • Police abuse isn't that common. It's just reported in the media because it will get more viewers. Not to say that it doesn't happen.

        • Wow, imagine officials admitting that US police "need to be more open." lol That would screw up a lot for our police forces over here. Then how would they take out their aggression?!"

        • Why can't America do this already? I know that a court in New York ordered some police officers to wear cameras as part of restrictions placed on the city's Stop and Frisk program, but we need to have all officers wear them.

              • I'm glad that the killing was found lawful, he was a stupid little thug and deserved what he got. I am in no way biased because his surname is a branch off my one and tainting our family tree by association <.< OT Cameras on Police should really be a basic thing by now, it allows them to have concrete evidence for prosecution and it protects the public in the rare case of an abuse occurring.
