Are humans born with the obligation to contribute to society?

This question has always bugged me, ever since I heard the insult of "contributing nothing to society". I don't think that we are. If someone chooses to not help or hurt their fellow man, who are we to say anything?

  • Yes, we are. Of course we don't have to act on that obligation but as a species, society is required to keep order and if you don't help contribute to that, you're just dead weight.

  • We require society in order to survive, so we require society to survive. Whether helping others should be defined as contributing to society depends on how you define society, and how that person fits into it. Really, I think these should be classified as two different questions.

  • No obviously, people often believe that we are born with our personalities, our desires, our interests. When in reality it's formed through socialization, created by interacting with family, friends and strangers.

  • Lol no. You have an obligation to yourself, but you are not obligated to care for others. We do so because we want to, but we don't have to. >inb4urjustselfish! >inb4urahorriblepersonforbeingbornwiththechoicetocareforothers

    • The first mindset we have is that of our subconscious Id, so no, we aren't born with it.

    • Everything little thing we do contributes to society. It may not be huge but the littlest things add up. Good work m8
