what I'm afraid of is the game ending up being a space magic feast, where everyone is just using supers to 1 hit kill everyone they see

You have to charge up a super before you use it. Sounds like the prime opportunity to gank someone.

Right, having something over-powered is always scary. It makes the game very one dimensional and not fun after long. Luckily, Bungie typically doesn't release a game with OP functionality *coughH2swordandprepatchpistolsH3regenReachevadecough* ;)

And we can't forget armor lock.

Haha! Well, I personally put Armor Lock in the "bad idea" category vs. the OP one. From what I remember from playing Reach matchmaking prepatch, I didn't find players or teams with AL unfair, it just wasn't fun to play. The fights were just very limited in creativity and entire portions of maps had to be avoided (lift landing spots, corners). Typically, I found someone else to engage or if forced, have to bait players to use their AL juice by slowly dealing damage while keeping a safe distance from their insta-locking and pray/spray weapon of choice!

Edited by Cypher Alpha: 12/23/2013 1:42:50 AMGuardians are very agile so dodging Super Abilities should be manageable. EDIT: And there are also cool-down timers.

From the supers I saw so far it looks like unless you can dodge bullets you're pretty screwed, and cool down timers still wouldn't really fix the problem.

In the brief glimpses into PvP matches (the Thank You video and the Christmas Community Theatre) I saw Guardians just frantically flinging Space-Magic left and right... So Super Abilities will be playing a huge role in PvP. Hopefully they aren't an insta-kill then. Maybe there'll be plenty of defensive Abilities and Passive-Effects to counter all of that.

0:59 hopefully...
