Alright guys, here is a rather controversial topic for you to discuss. Designing one's own baby. That's right, the technology and genetic research to modify your baby before birth is nearing reality. Genes that influence gender, disease inheritance, and even physical/mental capability can be selected by parents. Want the perfect aryan child? Go ahead. At first, the ability to adjust traits might be limited and not always guaranteed, but who's to say what the future holds?
So, what is your take on this? Should designing babies be legal? Should it be limited to certain traits such as inheritance of cancer?
In my opinion, this is the future. For a period of time there may be a division between upper class (designed babies) and lower class (regular babies), and it will be rough. However, with time, maybe every human could afford to enhance their babies, and the entire human race would reap the benefits.

I'm very iffy about anything other than removing the potential for genetic diseases or other possibly detrimental factors like that.....
-
Other than for the prevention of generic diseases, I don't really think that this is right.
-
Getting rid of diseases is fine, but anything beyond that is just kind of "wrong".
-
I approve of using it to reduce or completely remove the risk of genetic conditions that would hinder the life of the child, but as for choosing your child's appearance and gender and all that? I'm not at all fond of that idea.

I'm okay with babies being made so that they have no mental or physical disabilities. Being born with things such as down syndrome or Cerebral Palsy is horrible and we should do whatever we can to stop it. This also raises the question of should we have the ability to make it so all people are born with Immeasurable IQs and high metabolisms so their bodies reach peak physical condition months after they are born should be allowed. If everyone was like that it wouldn't be special anymore. But putting a weight like that on someone can also be bad.

I think this whole generation is sick. If you don't want a baby, kill it. If you do have one then tell us your preferences and we will make a baby for you. You're lowering a humans status down to a doll what happens when you're unhappy with the result? It just takes away from the unconditional love. If we could use it to prevent diseases then that's good but pick and choosing from a palette of how you want a child is wrong.

6 RepliesPreventing handicaps and giving them genes to better fight diseases/have immunity to them is cool and I'm fine with. I'm kinda torn between allowing them to be attractive and physically superior like spartans. I mean it's like in the comic books when they create a super soldier serum. It's the future of human evolution and what not, but instead we would use it to just fight wars against each other and other violent things.

You're helping the kid out later in life. I don't see the issue

Edited by Dick VanDick: 12/12/2013 9:23:31 PMI am finding this pretty hard to debate on. It's human too want to fuk around with shit. At our current time I think genetic engendering is something to be done at a very slow process. And as people become uses to it (I bet sometime late in my life) We take that step to make our self's better mentally and physically. EDIT: Oh and there should be law to help restrict what can be done.
-
Correctional only.
-
I'm all for it because with it we can get rid of certain diseases and cancers. While also choosing what is best for the child such as intelligence.
-
Only for certain aspects like genetic disease.
-
I'm alright with getting rid of genetic diseases and I fully support it. Although everything else I'm if'ish about. I don't have anything against designing babies, just the huge room for error during the process (when they can remove or alleviate that risk more so, then I'll think if taking a stand on this topic).

I like the idea

1 ReplyPretty sure everyone would modify their child to be a incredibly perfect version of themselves. Because that's all parenting is... Making a better "you". Nobody wants their child to just be "normal" everyone wants their child to be a millionaire playboy, philanthropist, astronaut, nobel prize winning, physicist. Everyone is just lying if they're saying that they just wanna be second best.

Edited by Progo: 12/12/2013 7:25:37 PMIT'S NOT MODIFICATION ! It's selection >.> Modifying implies the kid already exists and you are changing him/her. Anyhow, I think it is good, especially if the parents have a lineup of genetic diseases. So long as the genes used are human genes, it's all cool with me. A potential issue is if parents start choosing all males, but it's currently expensive enough that shouldn't be a problem. What I mean is, if I could make my children be "Alpha Double Plusses" from 'Brave New World' I would, I will want the best for them when I am married.

Edited by Gatsby: 12/12/2013 5:56:42 PMI think designing babies as in choosing how they look is wrong, however I think its great that parents can make sure their child has no genetic diseases or disabilities.

Only eliminating genetic diseases or abnormalities. Thats it.

I actually wrote a paper on this... character limit restricts me from posting it.

I dont want babies to be better than me.
