This was why he was arrested, posting a sectarian comment (hate between Catholics and Protestants is a big problem in Glasgow) not because he made a helicopter joke.

He has every right to say what he did without arrest. That is an integral part of freedom of speech and expression. He might not get a job because of it, which is fair but he should not be arrested.
He has every right to say what he did without arrest.
Really? Why did they arrest him, then?
-
Mass hysterical overreaction.
-
So you think the police just flat out don't know anything about Scottish law?
-
My position isn't exactly about law, per se. That said, assuming Scotland has an equivalent legal doctrine to free speech (which I don't think it has one in the strictest sense, but it is technically covered by common law), it wouldn't be the first time a nation with free speech has arrested citizens for similar offenses, which I also don't agree with.
-
Are you an American? Then you clearly don't know shit about Glasgow, you don't get that this kind of thing is a serious offence due to the high level of sectarian violence.
-
I don't think Americans understand there are different cultures and social norms outside of their own. That's why they often cry "opressin of deh freedums" and the like when stories like this come up. Oh, but let's not forget the ultimate hypocrisy of it all; the NSA takes notes on someone whenever they take a dump all in the name of "national security", while the majority of Americans couldn't give a shit about it happening (ironically, it's also the international community that's more outraged if anything).
-
I don't know why you're going on a rant here, because if America's done anything right at all, it's the first amendment.
-
I completely agree. What I have a problem with is people who think it means you can say whatever the hell you want, even though you can't. For example, you can't libel or slander someone, nor can you violate copyright law. When you consider that, the US is not unique in that it is the only nation with "free speech". In regard to how much free speech is permissible (ie. to what degree), I'll defer to some research which, again, shows that the US is not unique, nor does it grant the highest degree of freedom of speech.

I think its because Catholics ruin things but thats just me.
-
Like what?
-
Yeah people make sectarian comments like that in America and nobody gets arrested for them. Because we have freedom of speech.
-
There's a difference between freedom of speech and hate speech. I'm pretty sure if you write on the internet "death to n*ggers" or "lets all go shoot up a school" you will get arrested, and oh wait I'm right it has happened. So freedom of speech my ass.

Edited by Ninja Guardian: 12/3/2013 8:06:51 PMOkay. Comments saying they're shooting up a place get followed up. Sectarian comments like that twitter post get left alone because its just a troll. Face it. America has more freedom of speech than England.
-
It wasn't a troll, you clearly have not been to Glasgow. Catholics and Protestants hate each other with a bitter passion, it's worse than Israel and Palestine.
-
Yes I'm sure there's daily suicide bombings and riots in Glasgow.
