Free speech is one thing. Hate speech is something different entirely.
This man's excuse is "OH WELL ONE DAY TEH GUD OPINIONS R GUN BE TEH BAD MINORITY ONES SO DEN HOW R U GUN FEEL"
That isn't going to happen. That Orwellian future would never exist because of the internet itself. I can't stand these fucking fear mongering jackasses. If you're going to be a racist piece of shit you deserve some community service hours or a fine.
No, words on a screen are not just 1's and 0's. They have meaning. Sure, people could be more thick skinned, but why not punish someone for being a dick in the first place? Why should we have to ignore these people when we should be fixing the problem itself?
And apparently being respectful is not an option for this fine fellow, otherwise you'd be joining in on the "national circle jerk of sadness". Yeah, it's much better to laugh at the people who died and hope they landed on a bar with a specific race of people you don't like because you're an ignorant piece of trash.
Fuck both these guys. They both need an ass whooping to learn some respect.
If you're going to be a racist piece of shit you deserve some community service hours or a fine.
Not really.

I think members of hate groups should be punished. If you don't, fine. But that's my opinion and I think it's a good idea.

>be challengerX >goes full retard over a dumb thread seriously, get your shit together. you seem to go into full rant mode whenever you post, and if somebody disagrees with you, you go full retard. you never go full retard.
-
Why do you keep talking shit to me in every thread I post in? You got that whole closet homo thing going on and it makes you frustrated?
-
it's just entertaining lol
-
I'm not mad. You seem to be over the way you keep attacking me in almost every thread I post. If you have a problem with the way I talk about religion, come out and say it. But don't try and start an argument with me over something unrelated because you harbor animosity towards me.
-
I'm "attacking" you because that one person isn't a hate group. He made an asshole comment on twitter and now he's in jail. It's freaking sad that he's in jail for such a minuscule comment. What if you were jailed because you hate religion and made an anti-Islamic comment? I'm sure you have a decent rebuttal, I kind of want to read it.
-
Edited by challengerX: 12/6/2013 11:14:18 PMI don't think anybody should go to jail for being racist. I do think you should be tried as a criminal for joining a hate group. If I was part of a hate group which targets Muslims/Christians/Jews/Whatever, then I should be tried as a criminal. I am not part of such a group and I don't discriminate towards certain religions or people. I think religion is a load of shit and slows us down as a species, but that's as far as I'll go.
-
Should I try and argue a point or would that be a waste of time if you're just going to talk down to me?
-
Say what you want. If you're not going to insult me then I have no reason to talk down to you.
-
Edited by Seggi: 12/5/2013 7:59:03 AMUgh. The problem with hate speech isn't really that it offends people (I mean, sure, that's a problem, but it's not one that the law should address), it's that it has the very real possibility of inciting people to violence, or meaningful discrimination.
-
Hate speech laws don't do anything to prevent violence that can't already be done under existing laws.
-
That's my point. It's not about stopping people's feelings being hurt, it's about stopping violence.
-
Contrary to popular belief, no one has a right to be offended, and no one's rights end where another's feelings begin. "Toughen up or shut up" really should be a code to live by.
-
"Toughen up"? By that logic, there should be seperate facilities for blacks and whites because the blacks should just "toughen up" instead of being offended. It's not like it inconveniences anybody, it's just discriminatory.
-
False equivalency - Abrasive opinions do not violate anyone's rights, whereas segregation is all about violating people's rights.
-
Not really, if blacks and whites get equal education in segregated schools, what's the problem? That blacks feel discriminated against? According to you they should just toughen up.
-
Edited by The Great DanTej: 12/6/2013 1:37:32 AMYou're just repeating yourself now - segregation violates their rights - in regards to the "separate but equal situation" you're talking about, their rights to be treated equally and not be discriminated against are being violated. This is completely different to hurting someone's feelings over a few comments, which does not violate any rights. According to me, you should stop talking shit.
-
You're not understanding the point I'm trying to make. I'm not talking about sparing people's feelings or executing someone who uses racial slurs. I'm talking about outlawing hate groups, and possibly jailing their members if necessary. Why everybody thinks I'm talking about not offending is beyond me. Maybe I worded my post wrong, I don't know. But that wasn't my point.
-
It was probably worded wrong... Though, as long as a hate group just sticks to hating verbally, and not actually harming people, well i couldn't care less.
-
Agreed
-
So you don't think people have the freedom to express themselves?
-
Does anybody think that people should have complete and unbridled freedom to do so?
-
I'd rather that extreme than the opposite. But really, people have a right to express hateful opinions. If they're not starting riots or organizing lynch mobs, there isn't really a problem.
-
Edited by Seggi: 12/5/2013 6:57:35 PMSure there is, if the language they use and the opinions they express have the potential to incite people to violence. I mean, I don't think that's very likely to happen because of a single twitter post, but when it's part of a broader culture of that kind of thing, it can definitely have meaningful consequences.
