Doesn't Sony own Blu-Ray? The reason I ask is because I know that the XB1 can now play Blu-Ray, and at this point it seems MS has to make their games more compact so they don't end up having multiple discs in a case, and the only feasible way to do that at this point is to put them on BD like Sony does with their PS3 games. So wouldn't MS owe money to Sony for using BD?

  • Sony doesn't own Blu-Ray. Blu-Ray is simply a format of data storage. It was designed by a media group that, other than Sony, includes Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips and Samsung.

  • But if they all are shareholders in association in creating Blu-Ray, shouldn't Sony get a cut of BD profits?

  • I would assume so, yeah. It's just not correct to state that Sony owns Blu-Ray. This is nothing new though. The DVD was also produced by Sony along with other companies. Sony got a cut of every 360 game sold that way as well. Either way, this works the other way around too. Microsoft earns money from every laptop Sony sells since they run on Windows.
