Consider this: In the space between planets, there's really no point in flying your own ship. You're probably traveling at some hypothetical faster than light speed, and there would be nothing to do. That only leaves orbital flight, and in-atmosphere flight. If they allowed in-atmosphere flight, it would negatively impact exploration in Destiny. Say there is some weapon hidden on the top of some mountain, and you have to trek up some overgrown trail to reach the summit. That could all be skipped if you can just fly up to the top. So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty. There are no paths to follow, doors to unlock, treasures to find. The only activity of any real entertainment value would be dog fights. Now sure, a dog fight would be fun once or twice, but I don't think it's something people would end up going back to much. Not when there's a planet below you with loot to find.

  • Well they have concepts of derelict ships in space. From what I understood, these would act as the equivalent to a dungeon or compound found on the surface of planets. It would be cool to be able to get in your ship, fly out of the atmosphere manually, then set a course for a planet but while on that course you're interrupted by a distress signal. You choose to investigate and take manual control of your ship in a decent vicinity of the derelict ship.

  • Would be a added bonus if you had the chance, while in a fire fight. That while in a pvp match or team based match, that your opponents had the option to retreat or make a get away in there ship, whilst you chase after them. Which then leads you into a new battle mode, or possibly try to track them to another planet and pick up where you left off. On the flip side if your talking like real time speed of light sitting in a worm hole for five minutes, would never happen. lol I would rather pls free online bingo. Hehe.

Well that's limiting Bungie based on a poor imagination. Why go to the moon? It's grey and has craters when Earth is right there. Space can't have anything fun in it? There's no point. Please space flight in the hands of an imaginative design team could easily fill my time between FPSing on different planets when getting around the Solar System. But hey not like EVE online hasn't been around for years flying in space with a successful membership and game economy in all that emptiness. Your little points on why space flight shouldn't be included does nothing for inner seven year old but give a lot excuses to the lameness of a pretty piece of geometry shaped like a space ship sitting on a poopdeck with nothing to do.

  • All you said is true but true freedom in a game is bliss. If you go almost anywhere and travel where heart desires and works smoothly it give more room for the player . Also it opens the door for PvP dogfights in space. Savy?

Well sadly SpaceShips could have been a defining feature or companion that would have really helped move Destiny away from just being another FPS. TitanFall has mechs, while COD went with dogs, while Battlefield has plenty of vehicles rolling around. A massive space ship you control is far cooler than a floating Christmas Ornament right out of the original Tron movie. I think they were wrong to limit themselves to only FPS, especially with the Long Night of Solace being a nice break in Reach and was a memorable event. A lot of gamers who play FPS are space sim pilots to just sim pilots thanks to Wing Commander to Aces of the Pacific. Too bad they nixed it. It was certainley an exciting feature that made the imagination run wild.

  • Nah they got some time they've got 7 months to make a decision about this. It just we the players have to have a large amount of opinions and Bungie may or may not allow us to personally our ships.

  •
Well that's limiting Bungie based on a poor imagination.
Hey, I'm not limiting Bungie. They've already decided not to allow flight. I'm just considering why that may be the case.
Why go to the moon? It's grey and has craters when Earth is right there.
Color doesn't affect mechanics. However, craters are great places to explore. You're not helping your argument.
Space can't have anything fun in it? There's no point.
I didn't say nothing. I said that dogfights would provide entertainment value. If you can think of other things, by all means, share them.
Please space flight in the hands of an imaginative design team could easily fill my time between FPSing on different planets when getting around the Solar System.
Exactly, it's "filler" game content. It's the stuff you'd do between playing the actual parts of the game.
But hey not like EVE online hasn't been around for years flying in space with a successful membership and game economy in all that emptiness.
EVE online was designed to be a space sim. Should I complain that I can't land on a planet, search ancient ruins, and find a new pistol or helmet in EVE? No. That would be absurd. That's not part of EVE gameplay. And it's not for lack of imagination on their part, it's an understanding of the scope of the experience they were trying to deliver to the player. Similarly, Bungie is aware of the experience they are trying to deliver, and have decided that space flight doesn't fit into that. Sure they could add it in, but it doesn't add anything to what Destiny is meant to be.
Your little points on why space flight shouldn't be included does nothing for inner seven year old but give a lot excuses to the lameness of pretty piece geometry shaped like a space ship sitting on a poopdeck.
Again, I'm not suggesting Destiny shouldn't have space flight. I'm only trying to consider the reasons why Bungie might have decided it didn't belong.

  • I'm not arguing for space-flight in Destiny. That being said, Star Citizen incorporates FPS ship boarding and planet exploration. It is possible, though I'm sure the FPS experience won't be a AAA one since the core gameplay is space flight.

  • Maybe later in the series they'll find resources for it, they did hint at that, although I don't remember them ever actually confirming space flight at any point. I think right now they're kind of hard pressed to get done more than what they planned for. Hopefully later there will be hard reasons for us to actually pilot but for now, the game itself doesn't really warrant it. I think it's definitely something they'll be thinking about after all of the discussion on it, though.

Well I hope so, but as for Destiny it will be a little saddening to see those designs just sitting there or revolving on a invisible turntable to add gear or parts and then sitting in the hanagar relegated to an ornament.

  •
So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty.
Choosing which area you want to land in based on navigating the planet from orbit would be really -blam!-ing cool, although probably not canonical without the dogfights considering the alien presence is probably palpable. (I'd also really like to dogfight a lot) Great argument though, space flight is indeed entirely aesthetic in the current scope of the game, and there's not really any reason to change that. Let's hope though, despite the epic scale of the game already, there's a chance to grow in all that empty space out there.
