With a few effective tips, one can cut down on the communication costs when study in abroad. Buy new cell phone: Instead of carrying a high-end cell phone from home country, you can buy a new one in your education destination country and avail attractive discounts offered through student card. Often foreign universities and colleges introduce student cards to help them make purchase of essential items at reasonable rates. When you purchase a new phone, do not forget to take an international calling card with the help of which you can call back home and manage your communication costs. • The best thing I could say is download skype or go to those internet cafes. From personal experience (Not studying, but just traveling abroad without my parents), all you need to do is go to an internet cafe, pay for about an hour, and then talk to them over through skype there. It's about $5, depending on the country. I got into an internet cafe for about $2.50 in the Philippines so I could call my mom because I was with my dad. However, in Japan, I had to pay about $10 to go into an internet cafe to talk to my mom and dad for one hour through skype.
