3 RepliesSince when did Battlefield have a campaign?

Edited by Elrond Hubbard: 10/30/2013 8:29:59 PMI played about half of the campaign last night. I'd have finished it if I hadn't started playing so late, but Person of Interest was on last night and I wasn't going to miss it. But without further ado, here are my first impressions: The opening music choice is really weird but you quickly realize it's supposed to motivate you to get out of your predicament. Just from the scene in the car, the graphics are significantly better than those of its predecessor. More polygons, and I thought the textures are quite a bit sharper, too. The water wasn't too shabby, either, MUCH better than Battlefield 3's water. The graphics are so good that it seems a bit silly that the between-mission cutscenes are pre-rendered. That's how good this game looks (I'd reckon the in-game models themselves are probably on-par with the cutscene models in BF3) The pre-rendered cutscenes actually look worse than the game for the reason that they're very obviously not in high-definition. But those cutscenes serve the logical purpose of keeping you distracted while the next level loads, so I guess that's a fair tradeoff. I should probably mention that I had some... issues on the PC version. I have a 7970 and yet there was significant stuttering even in the hallway, no matter what graphics settings I used. When the action was about to start, DirectX decided to break. I started up the game again from my last checkpoint, and I kid you not, my squad looked something like this. I went and installed AMD's beta drivers, which fixed my squadmates and made the game stable and reduced stuttering enough that I could actually play the game. There were still a few issues though, chiefly texture popup--in a particular sequence, an elevator door opened to reveal a Chinese soldier in a void of skyboxy-ness. The textures popped in eventually, but it was obviously very immersion-breaking. In short, if you're playing on the PC, make sure you get the beta drivers as soon as they come out. But on to the gameplay. First of all, this is by far the best Battlefield campaign so far. It still doesn't compare to the hyper-polished campaigns of games like Call of Duty, but it's getting there. I played on the Hard difficulty and didn't have too much trouble yet, so if you know what you're doing, Hard is the way to go. Hard is so easy partly because of the abundance of ammo crates and the fact that they let you pick up any weapons you've already unlocked. It throws off the balancing of the campaign and doesn't really force you to scrounge for weapons. I got to try out the squad mechanics a bit. At first, I was a little disappointed by its simplicity--you press the spot button for targets for your squad to take out--but the nice thing was that my squadmates are actually competent shots. They did steal a few kills from me, which was actually pretty surprising. The squad will usually have trouble keeping up and need to teleport to the you, because your regular walking speed is too slow for them, but your sprinting speed is too fast. There's also a new, minor stealth component. You'll have one of those circular arrow things around your reticule that'll point to enemies that are about to spot you. It's nice to be able to take out one or two enemies before you start a firefight. For these moments, your squad won't open fire unless you tell them to, or unless you get spotted and start taking fire. Keep in mind, however, this is definitely not Splinter Cell or even Crysis, so don't expect to be sneaking through entire levels. There's a particular scripted moment with a tank, but it's refreshing because you're not completely on-rails. You actually don't have to take the same route every time. Some routes will be tactically better than others. Without spoiling too much, though, a route that might seem safer at first may actually turn out to be a bad idea, so you have to stay on your toes to survive. The campaign is far from perfect, but I can say that I'm actually enjoying it.

Edited by Axdinosaurx: 10/30/2013 4:11:25 AMI didn't bother with it and went straight to MP, though I've heard it's very mediocre. They should have done what Titan fall is doing and focus only on MP which is the only reason people play Battlefield anyways.

is battlefield 4 out? i thought they were waiting till next gen launch?

I'll probably be blinded within the first 10 minutes of the game from lens flare to give an opinion.

Too much lens flare.

I don't even know why DICE even makes campaign for Battlefield anymore... Battlefield is all about the multiplayer.

4 RepliesSeems like everyone finds it be be a little meh or terrible. I personally think it's pretty good so far. I'm around half way through it. It's better than a ton of other military FPS campaigns (which isn't really an accomplishment) with the addition of being pretty good looking. Their were parts (graphically) that pissed me off though. When you're on the ship mission and the sky is all pixelated black. Come on now.... Go in and fix that shit dice.... It takes away from any of the immersion.

Not as good as Ghosts.
-
From what Ive seen it looks pretty bad. Wish they'd go back to the Bad Company games.
-
I heard it's better than BF3's, but still not that good.
-
I have to wait till late November because next gen. I'll just go with bad for now.
-
I think it's going to suck and be generic but I'll have to see it for myself once I get it with my PS4
-
Don't know, haven't played it.

1 ReplyJust picked up my pre-order from GameStop and about to install. I'll play tonight and see how far I get. BTW Goji, I pulled off a non-scripted helicopter kill with a grenade launcher in Bad Company 1 the other day. Map was Oasis, the pilot was trying to kill me and was flying very low for some reason, so my only way out of it was a very well-placed grenade launcher shot as he tried to ram me. I was surprised the chopper actually blew up, and my teammate who saw me do it froze when I looked at him as if to say "damn, you're a crazy son of a bitch." I forgot to take a screenshot though ;_;

Haven't played it yet, saving for later.

Edited by Dusty: 10/29/2013 8:08:11 PMJoking aside. (IMO) it is genuinely terrible from the walk-through I watched. The gameplay was still painfully linear. Wasn't much of a story either. That Dima guy from Battlefield 3 showed up for a whopping one mission and could be replaced with any of the other characters and not really make a difference. Also, the ending is particularly odd. You have to choose:
Whether to sacrifice black soldier dude or Chinese soldier chick. Since it's at the end, both outcomes are pretty much exactly the same. -blam!-ing Black Ops II had better choices
