•
I don't understand, when would a car ever have to make a moral decision?
The full article gives more detail by presenting the trolly problem, but I had to only include some excerpts due the length. But anyways, consider a situation where the car's programming can tell that a crash is nearly inevitable. However, there are several different outcomes, depending on the car's "decision". Suppose one maneuver will likely severely injure all four occupants of the car, whereas another one will protect the occupants but likely injure a pedestrian, but to a lesser degree. This is only one scenario, but it shouldn't be difficult to come up with other ones that are more complex.
