Wasn't there some natural cure for that being touted recently? My father had it pretty bad after he had a stroke years ago.

Edited by Snake Plissken: 9/19/2013 6:51:39 PMI feel like I've looked up everything, and there's definitely a lot of snake oil "cures" being touted. As far as I can see, the best treatment that can be offered is basically counselling and sound therapy which reduces perception of the noise. Only £2m per annum goes towards tinnitus funding in the UK - criminal, considering that as much as £12m is spent on homeopathy. Frickin' homeopathy.

I'm a big fan of alternative medicine, but homeopathy makes no sense, and the more I read the less sense it makes (I'm a premed student so I read nerdy articles online whenever I get the chance) How does the sound therapy work?

It's called "habituation", which is basically a nice word for "getting used to it". They give you a hearing-aid type device which produces low-level white noise at a similar frequency to the sound to wear 24/7 for 6 months - 1 year ish. After that period of time, your brain no longer registers the background sound of the device or the tinnitus noise. Eventually, you stop noticing the sound. If it goes well, this can be almost as effective as a proper cure.
