In general, I really wish that society would put less of a focus on dividing people based on sex and gender
Why? Sex and gender aren't some fluid, obscure notion. You're either a male or a female. Feeling that you're the opposite sex of what you were born as is a mental disorder, not some lifestyle choice that society needs to be accepting to.

Holy fuck..... so much stupidity in one small post. If you would actually like to have some education on the topic so you can stop being a waste of human life feel free to PM me.
Feeling that you're the opposite sex of what you were born as is a mental disorder, not some lifestyle choice that society needs to be accepting to.
implying that society shouldn't be accepting of the mentally disordered. also implying that "mental disorder" isn't a vague term to begin with. how is the present-day amount of societal focus on sex and gender beneficial?

While Gender isn't exactly binary, considering that it only really "works" if it matches your sex (which is binary), we can safely say that gender is not fluid (that's just your tumblr fetishists trying to be taken seriously). Hey, think of it this way, why do transpeople transition in the first place? To make right what once went wrong.

Edited by die wily: 9/12/2013 7:07:56 AMthe difference in genders is cultural. arbitrary and malleable.
gender absolutely is such a notion
No, it's not. You're one or the other.
implying that society shouldn't be accepting of the mentally disordered. also implying that "mental disorder" isn't a vague term to begin with.
We should be more focused on treating a mental disorder than we are on 'accepting' it. Are you accepting of letting a schizophrenic act out instead of getting treatment? Are you accepting of someone with manic depression just dealing with their issue until they off themselves? The societal focus on sex and gender has been in existence for a long time. Explain what problems a vague view on sex/gender would solve, because I can't think of any.
We should be more focused on treating a mental disorder than we are on 'accepting' it.
So how do you propose we treat gender dysphoria? 'cause right now all we really have is "transition and hope you can pass"
-
More research to figure out how it works. What type of triggers it has, how it manifests over time, etc. I'm not one for advocating medication as a solution, so I would start with basic therapy. Someone with the dysphoria just sitting down talking about why they feel the way they do. Who knows, this isn't really an area that's well looked at.
-
I agree, neuroscience in general is something that we really should be working on more; also consider this, a dysphoric person talks out all their problems with their doctors, and they come to the conclusion that their best option is to transition, what then?
-
I can't really say that we should stop them, but I don't think we should afford them any type of special rights or privileges. Go ahead and do it but don't expect anyone to protect your feelings when people aren't accepting of it.
-
Is social recognition/acceptance a special right? is it a privilege to not be discriminated against? No one has to like transpeople, but at the very least, shouldn't we tolerate them?

Edited by NoelKannagi: 9/12/2013 12:51:23 PMIt is not a mental disorder.
-
It's not a mental disorder Per se, but it's not the kind of existence people want to stay in, which is why they seek medical help to transition. so you could call it a condition of sorts, just one that doesn't have the "i'm a -blam!-ing retarded sociopath" connotations.
-
Yes, it is. If your body is that of a male and your mind thinks that you're a female, it's a mental disorder.
-
No, it's not. You're one or the other.
Or neuter. Or some combination of the two. Gender properties are a series of arbitrary culture taboos. There is no absolute. And again, your use of the word disorder is liberal.
The societal focus on sex and gender has been in existence for a long time.
Oh, well then it *must* be just.
