Transgenderism is BS anyway.
"OH LOOK AT ME, I MAY HAVE A PENIS BUT I FEEL LIKE A WOMAN! THEREFORE I MUST BE A WOMAN!"
what a crock of shit.

I feel like transgenderism is a mental disorder
-
It was, but is no longer. Simply being transgender is not a mental disorder. However, gender dysphoria is.
-
what's the difference?
-
The difference is that gender dysphoria is to describe people who experience significant discontent with the sex they were assigned at birth and/or the gender roles associated with that sex. Being transgender is not a mental state, but gender dysphoria is. Gender dysphoria is often solved by hormone replacement therapy and/or surgery, but one is still transgender.
-
but it seems to me that most people who are trans have gender dysphoria.
-
While true, that doesn't make them the same thing.
-
like most pedos are r@pists?
-
Define what mental disorder means and then explain how transgenderism matches that criteria.
-
Mental disorders are generally defined by a combination of how a person feels, acts, thinks or perceives. A mental disorder is an abnormality. They don't feel genuine, authentic, and comfortable within their external appearance because it doesn't match to what their brain thinks it should be. A schizophrenic has lost touch with reality, or can't differentiate from reality due to his brain. A transgender individual has lost touch with it's body due to its brain, and believes that it should be changed.

What do you mean by "abnormal"? Being a Muslim is a way a person feels, acts, thinks, and perceives that is, statistically, not normal. Does this mean that it is a mental disorder?
-
Edited by GrandmasterNinja: 9/12/2013 1:43:44 AMwhy the hell are you bringing religion into a debate about mental disability? >statistically not normal if you want numbers: 26% of the world's population is Muslim (approx. 1.6 billion). Muslims make up more than a fourth of the human population...I think you need to check you statistics buddy. Now if you want to talk about the Fanatic Terrorist Muslims, that's when I think you're in the right. I'd treat them like mental cases cause that's exactly what they behave like. Just like the KKK, just like the IRA, just like Assad, and the people committing genocide in Africa. They all act the same. Like nut cases. Oh and read the rest of the thread before trying to create some sort of knee jerk response.
-
26% is a minority, and not statistically "normal." I am simply applying your logic to a different scenario to show you how shitty it is. Let us suppose that only 1% of people in the world list vermilion as their favorite color. Would liking vermilion then be a mental disorder?
-
so about 3 billion need to do something to be considered normal?! surely you jest.
-
What do you mean by "normal"?
-
nor·mal ˈnôrməl/: adj ; conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected.
-
In what way does liking vermilion meet that definition?
-
Not sure to be honest, I don't know the statistic. But I'm sure a lot of people like the color red, and would classify vermilion as red. So I'd say it's quite normal.
-
You are evading the question. If an extremely small minority of the population has a benign preference, do they have a mental disorder?
-
no, we're not discussing preferences here NewRad. I'm not saying: "If you're not normal you're mental". You took one god damn word WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY out of proportion.
-
Listen, I am not the one who categorized an extremely oppressed group of people as mentally ill. That was you. I am not the one who proposed an absurd definition of mental illness that relies on the extremely ambiguous idea of "normality." That was you. These are both very large claims to make and if you are going to make them you had better be able to defend them against harsh criticism. So, please offer me a valid definition of mental illness and explain why being trans* meets this definition.

as posted below:

A mental disorder or psychiatric disorder is a psychological pattern or anomaly, potentially reflected in behavior, that is generally associated with distress or disability, and which is not considered part of normal development
Transgender people are commonly distressed due to being in the wrong body and it's obviously not part of normal development. It also clearly falls under anomaly considering these people deviate from the norm. It's really not that hard.
And another explanation found above:
The difference is that gender dysphoria is to describe people who experience significant discontent with the sex they were assigned at birth and/or the gender roles associated with that sex. Being transgender is not a mental state, but gender dysphoria is. Gender dysphoria is often solved by hormone replacement therapy and/or surgery, but one is still transgender.
I just believe that gender dysphoria and being transgender is one in the same.

I don't see sources
