I'd out the chances of this happening at 0.0%. Also, their looking for micro transactions too? Wow. If they go for some paid DLC content too it's the trifecta. It seems to me you have to pick one. And good luck picking the monthly fee because we already pay one. I cannot conceive of a way Microsoft waives the Gold requirement.

If they want to compete with Sony they'll have to. Granted Sony has been silent on the issue of PSN+ and games with a subscription (probably due to this being one of few cases). If they aren't putting F2P games behind a paywall I doubt they are for subscription based games.

  • But not requiring Gold for one game does nothing. All you'll be doing is devaluing Gold. It won't cover all my games but ill still need it and be paying for it. For me, paying for a monthly subscription for a single hand is out of the question.

There are two issues here: One is the subscription for TESO. Whatever Microsoft's policies are this is an issue with Bethesda. I'm 100% with you on not wanting to pay $15 a month for one game. And judging by how quickly subscription based games are going F2P consumers seem to agree as well. The other issue is one with Microsoft forcing you to subscribe so you can subscribe. Forget whether Bethesda charging for TESO is good or bad. For people wanting to play TESO this is a blatant money grab. It's cannon fodder for the ongoing debate over just what the hell the "value" of Gold even is. When you pay a monthly fee for an MMO, which some people are fine with, they expect to pay one monthly fee to the game maker. They don't expect to pay their monthly fee and then an additional monthly tax.

And there's no way to make Microsoft the bad guy on this one. We can debate the Live subscription fee, but that's not really relevant. It's been in place for a long time. We've all adapted. Now if a game decides they want on the outside if that pay wall, that does nothing for the consumer. I still have to pay for Gold either way. I'm going to want to play games other than ESO. So it's an added cost. What's more is I don't want to contribute to the success of this idea. Let's say it works for Bethesda. Then others will try it. Pretty soon all top titles online will want to go this route. No thank you. This needs to fail so we can nip it in the bud.

  • Games not requiring XBL Gold is a problem because... we've always paid for Gold? That would be fantastic if this led to all games waiving the Gold fee. Great. Consumers have more money in their pockets to buy games. Sounds good to me. Sounds good for every consumer. Here we're talking about MMO's with subscriptions though. Microsoft will still be charging you to play COD and Halo online (God help us come the dark day they stop charging for multiplayer happens). A double subscription is B.S. for people interested in TESO for one. And secondly if Microsoft wants to compete with Sony they're going to have to take subscription based games and F2P games (as well as a variety of other things) out from behind the paywall.

  • My fear with gold no longer being required for games is that no one is going to just let go of that income. It will become an arm wrestling match between the game developer and the console makers on who gets our money. If games get outside the pay wall, they are going to charge you. If the pay wall disappears then they are going to charge you. Then instead of $60 a year for all online games, you'll get $60 a month for four games.

  • Do you really think that would happen when the subscription based model is giving way for the F2P model? How long until ESO goes F2P? Even Blizzard says it's only a matter of time before WoW goes F2P. And even if the subscription model wasn't dying you really think all online games would make the investment of putting that infrastructure in place? The market wouldn't support what you're suggesting.

  • Well, I'm not really into the FTP or MMO scene, so you may be way more informed about this than me. I'm just thinking about businesses and money. They've been taking our $50/$60 a year for a long time. I just don't believe it will go away. If anything it will only change hands.
