In the comics, it's yellow or blue solar radiation. In MoS, it's the entire atmosphere.
Also, it's the opposite around blue and red stars; he's stronger around blue suns because he's taking in more radiation, and he grows weaker around red suns because they don't give off enough radiation.

Why did they change it for the movie?
-
They probably thought it would seem more realistic.
-
Does it? Lol
-
Eh, about the same probably.
-
Stupid reason though.
-
To be cool and different? *Shrug*

What I don't understand is that Zod wanted to terraform earth instead of keeping it the way it is and adapting. If Zod changed the atmosphere, wouldn't he lose the power he has (flight, etc)? Gojira touched on this, I just want a second opinion.
-
Yes, he would.
-
So why change the atmosphere at all? I'd want that power.
-
Because he wanted Krypton back. The powers were cool and all, but I guess it's not the same as resurrecting his planet and species.
-
But the whole movie had a "bigger and better than before" tone. "We will strip the degenerate bloodlines that lead us to this." "And if there's on thing history has taught us, it's that evolution. Always. Wins." It would seem natural for Zod, being a military leader, to resurrect Krypton bigger and better than before. It's interesting to note that Gojira believes they would still be powerful, even after terra formation.
-
You could chalk it up to Zod being insane or something. Or just not thinking his plan through.

Ugh, that's a lackluster answer (not your fault lol). I wish I knew more about Kal and the Kryptons. I always seemed so focused on Marvel as a kid that I never wondered over to DC
