You're making a big deal out of this... That's pathetic.
And I think the librarian has the right idea.

The librarian's idea is terrible. And doesn't encourage reading, and it doesn't reward working hard. That's like a kid getting a prize in a math contest for saying 2+2=10 and at least he tried so he should win first place.

The aim of the competition is to make kids read. No matter how many books the kids read, if they read at least one (thats progress) then they should have a fair chance of winning some form of prize. Primary school or whatever you Yanks call it is not supposed to show kids the realities of the real world. It's to promote and learn social skills and basic skills. So enough of the whole 'hurh durh' there should only be one winner. It's nine year olds.

Except that drawing names from a hat doesn't encourage more reading. The kid who won first place every year EARNED first place, he read 63 books in the span of ten weeks, he is obviously more encouraged to read then some schmuck kid that maybe read a book. So why should that kid win over the ones who clearly has an incentive to read more? It's a competition, the whole point is to win, and first place should be given to the one who actually deserves it and was encouraged to read more, not some punk kid who maybe read a picture book and got lucky in a drawing.
