What's up with the sudden spike in comparisons to Call of Duty?

The answer is probably a combination of things: - People love to jump to conclusions and cast judgements based on hear-say and shallow observations without delving any deeper. - When presented with something new, people tend immediately drawn parallels to things the know and understand. Both of those examples are more about the human condition, than anything exclusive to gaming culture. - Finally, the COD and Halo communities are so competitive they already see a franchise war where there is none.
