I'm curious as to why computerized cars are necessary? For the handicapped and elderly, I can understand, but for those who are capable of manually driving (not talking about transmission), then I think this is just a novelty more than anything. It seems to have too many possible problems.

  • Do you have any idea how safer synced cars would be? Not only would traffic be insanely reduced, but human error (the cause for 99% of car accidents) would be virtually eliminated.

99% huh. Are you aware of the failure rates for computers in cars? Or the failure rates for computers in general? I'm an engineering student, so I know how applied science works. Not only is it expensive to develop these cars, which will obviously drive up the cost for a vehicle, you have millions of cars on the road and that's millions of different variables. It'll take an insanely long time to make it so the failure rate is negligible and they perform as well as manual driving, and that's being optimistic that they perfect it. Also, it won't insanely reduce traffic. If people are trying to go the same direction, there will always be traffic.

  • I'm not saying it would be perfect, not at all. It's crazy to think it would be. But the human element is what makes traveling by car so inefficient. Surely you can agree with that? A single stupid act miles ahead of you has a ripple effect. That's why we get jams most of the time. If cars were to start moving forward simultaneously, traffic would move much faster. Think about when you're on the highway. You wait for the guy in front of you to start moving to start moving yourself. He did the same for the guy in front of him and so on. That could be eliminated with automated cars. Automated cars would also be able to calculate whether or not they can safety brake at a yellow light.

I can agree the human element causes problems, but I don't think it's inefficient. I am looking at this in a comparative manner. Theoretically, automated cars sound nice, but making it and implementing it in a way for maximum efficiency is the problem I'm having with it. A lot of research and mapping needs to be done, and it has to constantly be updated. I think it would probably be a luxury for first world countries. Anyway, your point is duly noted about the ripple effect of moving traffic. I think it would be safer to move a car once the one in front of it moves just in case there's an error or perhaps an override is taken for the car in front. That would really seem to only work if every car on the road was automated. Perhaps they could add that later in the cycle though.

  • I agree, full automation is still a work in progress. It's quite far off. Google, with all their geographical data, are very suited for the job though.

  • Because, do you enjoy parallel parking?

  • I didn't realize parallel parking was a problem.

  • yea I only have a learners license though, so I'm not good at driving in general. If anything stresses me out while I'm driving, I forget how to do everything.

  • Weird. I perform best under stress. Parking is easy.

  • Yeah if my dad yells at me while I'm driving or if I get honked at or something I start forgetting to signal and stuff

No. No I don't. But when I successfully parallel park my self esteem goes up.

  • Computers now control the fuel injection system, which ks much more efficient, but much more complicated. As cars gained complexity, computers became necessary to control teh greater amount of variables.

I'm aware of those computers, I just mean the ones for experimental automated cars.
