Can I take this time to voice my small displeasure with how Del Toro set up all these awesome robots and we only get to see Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon in battle once before they are just destroyed? Would have been better to have them fight and die against the Category V Kaiju at the trench. It also would have allowed for the pilots to be more than cardboard cutouts that we see only briefly before being killed.

Cherno and Crimson were way better than Gypsy and Striker!
-
To be fair, their deaths are the only way to avoid a serious plot hole - because the kaiju were familiar with typhoon and cherno(and striker Eureka), they were able to take them out with ease, meanwhile gypsy was a massive curveball to them and that's what had them beat.

Totally agreed. Especially with the Category V Kaiju comment. Slattern is the most inconsistent thing ever. He was getting his a$$ kicked by a sword so bad that he had to call upon his friends to save his life. Then, he somehow takes a 1.2 megaton nuke to the face. Then, Gipsy is matching him in hand to hand combat. Then, Gipsy somehow uses its nuclear core to destroy him (which is utter bullsh1t, anything exceeding the temperature of a 1.2 megaton bomb should have melted Gipsy itself). He goes from being a wimp, to a bada$$, to the pure embodiment of WTF.

Edited by M37h3w3: 7/29/2013 3:34:48 AMKnow how some bad horror movies show the entire cast in a single scene or in shot after shot after shot of them? It's something that I've heard called showing the buffet of who's going to get eaten. The Jaeger intros in the Shatterdome was basically that. My thinking is: Cherno Alpha and Crimson Typhoon start curb stomping on that Otochi and going all "What ya' got bitch? What cha' got?" and then Leatherback goes all "herp derp, EMP" and then disables Cherno physically. Movie progresses as normal. All get repaired and assault the trench, tougher fight with Raiju and Scunner, damaging Cherno and CT and then Cherno and CT get roflstomped by Slattern, with Striker and Gypsy getting damaged, forcing the use the nuke (after Pentecost, who is rapidly deteriorating during the entire bit, ejects the asshole) and Gypsy then rides Slattern into the trench like a surfboard.

A) Tougher fight? He kills Raiju in one slash. B) Slattern was being roflstomped by them towards the beginning. It was just Scunner being a little b1tch that saved him. C) I still thought Gipsy Danger's intro and the entire Hong Kong sequence was totally bada$$.

Edited by Oyik: 8/4/2013 8:50:30 AM
A) Tougher fight? He kills Raiju in one slash.
In Raijus defence, he ripped off Gimpsys "sword arm", he didnt expect Gipsy to have a sword on its other arm, also Raiju is the fastest Kaiju underwater, he was rushing in for the killing blow not expecting Gipsy to whip out a secondary sword, due to his speed he couldn't dodge the sword fast enough, so he got sliced down the middle due to his own mistake.
B) Slattern was being roflstomped by them towards the beginning. It was just Scunner being a little b1tch that saved him.

Slattern is the most inconsistent thing ever. Slattern is a tough Kaiju, hence surviving the nuke from Striker, when he is revealed to have survive we see the skin around his chest badly burned, weakening it, so that explains why Gispy can burn a hole through his chest. Also remember that when the nuke goes off the blast is spread evenly, when Gipsy used its reactor to kill Slattern it concentrates on his already wounded chest area, letting the heat burn a hole right through him.
C) I still thought Gipsy Danger's intro and the entire Hong Kong sequence was totally bada$$.
Yes, yes it was :)

A) I know, I'm not saying it's illogical, I'm saying I just didn't like it. B) Slattern is tough, okay, but that final battle still makes no sense. If he's dying from sword slashes then a 1.2 megaton nuke should have vaporised him. If he can survive a 1.2 megaton blast while only sustaining burns, it's gonna take a lot to actually burn through him. I forget the calculations, but it was done before, and the actual heat load would have melted Gipsy should they have used any form of tangible material existent on the periodic table. C) Yep. "YEAH GIPSY KICK HIS A$$!!!"

As for the sword slashing then well I have no theories until DVD :P Wow re-reading that just made me realise how much of a nerd I really am :s
-
True. But that's also a sort of unrealistic interpretation of how a nuke works. It's not just "well 1 hit -95% HP." It's damage done over time as well. If it took that much force just to blast through the armor, well, the whole sword thing is impossible, isn't it?
-
I could have a theory on it, but I'm not THAT big a nerd :P. Also it's a movie about robots fighting monsters, realism goes out the window for the most part (although we do need certain degrees of realism i agree). So relax dancing lizard <3

Ah whatever Let's just continue anticipating Godzilla 2014 and a possible Pacific Rim 2
-
I'm surprised at how much Pacific Rim made me love Kaiju!!

Edited by M37h3w3: 7/29/2013 4:03:21 AM
A) Tougher fight? He kills Raiju in one slash.
As per how it was directed yes. I just think another roflstomp would be a bit one note. Get the Jaeger's softened up first.
A) Tougher fight? He kills Raiju in one slash.
Wut?
I still thought Gipsy Danger's intro and the entire Hong Kong sequence was totally bada$$.
Indeed.

wat Assuming you were responding to my posts in chronological order: A) It was barely a "tougher" fight at all. Scunner hits them a few times, and Raiju is killed instantly. B) Yeah, Striker was wrecking him with its sword. He retreats and has Scunner do the fighting. C) Yep.
A) It was barely a "tougher" fight at all. Scunner hits them a few times, and Raiju is killed instantly.
I'm talking about how it "should" have been done. And Gypsy did get -blam!-ed up.
B) Yeah, Striker was wrecking him with its sword. He retreats and has Scunner do the fighting.
Now I get it.
