Was John Lennon a hero?

He was a hero.

He was nothing more than a musician.

Who cares?

My girlfriend and I just got done arguing about John Lennon. I think he was a hero, and my girlfriend thinks he was just another celebrity. I say he was a hero because he stepped out of the box to speak against the system, as well as to speak boldly about many other topics that weren't necessarily socially-acceptable things to sing about in mainstream music. Not to mention, of course, that he died one of the most influential musicians in history. (By the way, his personal life isn't relevant here... he obviously wasn't very nice to women among other things.) She said that if he was truly a hero, he would be in the history books. She said more people would know about him, and it would be a bigger deal. She thinks Lennon was simply a music man, and nothing more. I don't know what the Flood knows about the man, but does anyone have an opinion? I gave up trying to prove my girlfriend wrong, so now I'm just curious if anyone else has a constructive opinion about it. So what do you think, was he a hero, or just a famous musician?

He helped end Vietnam with the influence of his music. I'd say he's a hero for that.

  • The Incredible String band sang about the same things...Peace and freedom. While John Lennon went back to his huge house with his nice cars the Incredible String Band went to live in the forest eating nothing but vegetables they grew themselves...they were true to what they sang about. when was the last time the Incredible String Band got any credit?

  • He's a famous musician who did some good, I wouldn't call him a hero though. He's only seen in that light because of his fame. If he wasn't famous and did all those things he'd still be the same person doing the same things, it's just because we know about them that he is seen that way. I'm not saying his actions were fruitless by any means, it's just that we saw him as more than he was.

      • He was a hypocrite. He fought against the system by making anarchist songs, anti-oppression rhetoric, philanthropic statements and then went home to roll around in his money.

      • Putting my disdain and loathing for The Beatles aside, my friend was telling me some stuff about him that overall changed my opinion and level of respect for him (I think it was JL anyway I can't remember for sure) but I'm not sure if I'd consider him a hero... I mean, what about Ringo?

      • I don't think being influential makes him a hero. He was a musician with a good message.

      • Don't really give a shit, I never liked the beatles.
She said that if he was truly a hero, he would be in the history books.
This, however, is bullshit. There are countless heroes that aren't in history books.

Yeah, he spoke out against the system and made anarchism well known... And then went home to his lavish wealth. I like his politics but he was a hypocritical prick.

From what I've read he was kind of a huge asshole. Kind of a deciding factor in being considered a hero ya feel?

          • Just an hero. I also hate the beatles and everything about them, so my answer to your question is, he was essentially Beiber, way before Beiber.
