Climactic Events in Destiny

Public Events: One of the things that was revealed during Bungie's E3 presentation was the inclusion of Public Events in Destiny. Public Events provide an opportunity for numerous players to interact and fight together to accomplish an objective. While the idea of Public Events is cool enough as-is, I think they provide an opportunity for Bungie to develop the story and alter the game world in a way were players can directly effect the outcome. How would it work? These game changing Public Events would be larger than the average Public Event, ranging into the dozens, possibly hundreds of players. Due to the large impact that these events would have on the Destiny Universe, players would receive fair notice of these events prior to when they happen. For example, players receive a notification on their HUD every time they log-in that says, "ALERT: FALLEN BOMBER EN-ROUTE TO LAST CITY. ETA - 48hrs." With fair notice, players can clear their calendars and get ready for the fight. After the 48 hours are up, the Fallen Bomber comes into view, along with a large ground force. The Guardians present must stop the ground force, as well as take down the Fallen Bomber before it reaches the Last City. If they succeed, the Fallen Bomber crashes creating a new landmark, "Fallen Crashsite." In addition to this new landmark, the Guardians salvage a piece an experimental piece of technology which would allow the Fallen to harness the Traveler's power. When used by the Guardians, it unlocks several abilities not previously accessible to them. However, if the Guardians are unable to halt the Fallen advance, the Last City will be assaulted by the Fallen. This assault would result in civilian casualties, lowering the guardians morale, and decreasing the amount of XP earned by players for a set amount of time. In addition to the assault on the City, the Fallen deploy a new type of soldier; the Fallen Shock Trooper. This new enemy type radically changes how players approach the Fallen in combat, and refreshes the face of a rather stale enemy. What do you think? I'll admit, something like this may be a bit too much to ask for, but that's part of the fun of brainstorming. Regardless, how would you feel if something like this were implemented in Destiny? Do you have any suggestions or critiques? Feel free to post your thoughts below.

  • That certainly would make the Destiny universe feel very alive and active. I think that's an awesome idea.

  • I could see something like a community goal, like the Tower calls for a surge against the fallen and when the whole community kills a certain ridiculous number of Fallen, like a million, the whole community gets some sort of free content.

  • What if there was no real chance of success on the guardians part? We beat back the Fallen, get inside, and attempt to extract the new Tech. The Public event ends. We find out that the tech we were after has already been extracted by the fallen and is enroute to the enemy base. We hunt them down, get inside the base, infiltrate the lab, steal the tech back. But we're too late. They already got all the data from it that they need. New enemy types are added to the ranks of The Fallen and we also get our new abilities.

      • It would be nice if there was a messaging system alerting guardians of a public event.

        • I had a similar idea, but there is a few problem with your idea Not EVERYONE can play at once in the same play space. What if some people allow the bomber to reach the city but some don't? The event would have to take place over a longer period if time (like an entire weekend or something) allowing people with jobs or school or other pressing events to get to experience it. A remedy to my first point is that perhap the scenario you talked about could happen but the ship would wait outside the city for reinforcements or to prime a weapon or something. Everyone would see the ship (say in groups of 30, I just randomly made that up because its a multiple of 3) but the ship would have a HUGE shared health bar across the whole community. That way everyone would essentially be attacking the same ship. I have no idea I this is possible but just an idea.

          • I love the picture you painted with words. But yes, this may be A LOT to ask for, even the nature of this type of game-changing seems pretty intense. But it would be pretty dang cool, heck maybe Bungie is planning for stuff like this. They sure do make it sound like it. Fallen bomber approaching the Last City...no pressure... xD

              • It's a good idea but I don't think it would really work. If the game was only on one console with one server it would work but the multi platform prevents this. A big event might happen on an Xbox one server whereas it wouldn't on a PS4 server. Not only that but the final outcome of the event could be different, breaking the continuity of the game over the platforms. For this reason, I don't think there will be any major player contributed changes in the game. I may be wrong but it would be difficult for Bungie to implement.

                • I think it would work if it wasn't something that directly impacted the city, more like destroying a fallen base, that could have experimental tech, and if the fallen are able to repel the attack, then said tech could allow them to create your hypothetical fallen shock trooper, or if the base is destroyed, the city could use the tech, and perhaps new weapons are introduced.

                  • I cant imagine even with a window of time like that , that it be fair to those with jobs like me or who have classes like most of my co-workers and friends , you can hardly call off work or skip a class because you receive a message saying : ALERT: FALLEN BOMBER EN-ROUTE TO LAST CITY. and then what happens that time you don't make off in time or the person's class takes longer than expected , and the city falls because not enough people made it home to help , as you said ; This assault would result in civilian casualties, lowering the guardians morale, and decreasing the amount of XP earned by players for a set amount of time. and then you feel like crap because real life prevented you from helping and now everyone has to deal with the consequences .

                    • I think that this is a good idea, at least, it will show to players that something inside the game are uncontrollable. Maybe if just a few players comes to this Public Event could result in a catastrophic event - with we will lose the city and more... - but represents a dynamic growth of the game... if the city falls, we'll need to do our best to change it in our benefit...

                    • Yes! But I don't expect hundreds of players, like ESO is doing with their PVP.

                      • That would be cool. But, I wouldn't expect to see hundreds of players, nevermind enemies, on screen at once on current gen platforms (I mean X-box one and PS4. Am I allowed to call those current gen yet?)
