For the many of you who don't know, the Mortal Dictata is the legislation that prohibits the flash cloning of whole human beings.

  • That's actually only half the story, it's not just about flash-cloning, it's a whole code of ethics for the UEG/UNSC, we only know one specific coda of that right now though. It's about more than just cloning. And you can be damn sure that ONI has probably broken every single one of them....so if we're going to be doing any finger pointing at all, point it at the people with more blood on their hands and the ones responsible for it all in the first place. Everything with the Spartan II Program was cooked up and/or approved by ONI. They were the ones who came up with kidnapping kids because they knew augmentations wouldn't be able to work on adults, and likewise either came up with flash-cloning the kids themselves, or at the very least approved it afterall.

  • I wonder what it will be about, then. I'm pretty sure Halsey and/or ONI tried flash cloning at some point. It sounds familiar.

Its probably going to dominantly be about Naomi (Spartan 2) story and her father(Known Rouge) I think, well thats what I got from the Title.

  • Fair point. That big twist hinted at in the Thursday War blurb only came at the very end, and had no impact within the narrative as a result.

  • Halsey replaced the children she kidnapped for the spartan program with flash clones, who later died from the usual complications resulting from the process. I'm expecting an even larger ammount of anti-Halsey bullshit.

  • Mayhapsably. I'll admit I don't like the moral angle that Traviss has on Halsey, but I really do enjoy that there even is a moral angle on the entire expanded universe now. Far more emotive than Bungie's admittedly stellar storytelling.

  • Eh, this is something I'm going to have to say that Nylund is far better at, he left it up to the reader's interpretation what to make of Halsey. One can point out or focus on one specific aspect without forcing the reader into a position, which is what Nylund achieved in his portrayal of Halsey, he emphasized all of the good in her character and leaned more toward sympathetic, but ultimately it was up to the reader to decide what they thought of Halsey or her role in the Spartan Project. Which is not the case with Traviss, sadly. She makes the whole issue black and white and attempts to force her own views about Halsey on the reader without leaving any kind of alternative interpretation or room for differing opinions. It's all well and good having a conflict of morality, but if you box your readers or viewers into one position on that issue, then you have no business creating moral conflicts or issues at all. This is one of Traviss' biggest flaws, she attempts to force readers into agreeing with her often fallacious or otherwise incorrect interpretations or views on a series. Most of the stuff in Kilo-5 aren't bad ideas or plot in and of themselves, but are absolutely horrid because of Traviss' handling of them. If another writer had been hired to write Kilo-5 or if Traviss had been kept on the tightest possible leash imaginable while working on the story, it probably would have been a whole lot better.

  • What about the racism towards the Sangheili? The entire time they act like it's a good thing.

  • Mhm, that's one of the huge problems with Traviss' writing......the blatant and inherent hypocrisy. All of her characters go around acting as if murdering Sangheili and comitting genocide on the whole entire species is A-OK, no problem whatsoever........yet Halsey is the devil for signing on to head a program she didn't even come up with. I mean, ONI came up with the Spartan II Program in the first place, they knew they needed to used kids because adult bodies would reject the augmentations, and the flash clones would keep anyone from ever finding out ONI's hand in it. I mean 75 kids all disappearing at or around the same time is going to raise all kinds of red flags for anyone investigating it seriously. UNSC space is very small indeed, 75 kids across 17 or so colonies is not something that's not going to be unnoticeable or not leave behind clues to follow that would lead back to ONI.

  • May i again point out that Maggie wants to dehumanize halsey for the lives of 75 children out of billions but doesn't feel a shred of regret for letting reach fall to the covenant? She outright stated what she regretted in TTW and the fall of reach was not brought up once.

  • Didn't figure it out myself, just repeating what the guys on the FUTD and Halopedia forums noticed pretty quick.
