When I was looking back in the year, I remembered a topic my Senior Aerospace Science Instructor brought up in ROTC about space exploration. He asked us if we thought further exploration of space was worth the large amounts of money and time we put into it. I would like to hear responses from the rest of you about the topic. Keep in mind this is about further exploration, not about the stuff we've already done such as satellites and all that.

I think it should be heeded slightly until spacecraft are able to enter and exit the atmosphere with ease.
-
Not until there are no major problems here on earth.
-
1 ReplyYes, and once asteroid mining becomes a thing, the value of space travel will increase tenfold.
-
Yes. Scientific progress is ultimately more important than everything else.
-
Yes absolutely! With our ever expanding population we're running out of space and resources so venturing into space in search of new habitats and resources seems worthwhile. Plus it's super cool.
-
15 RepliesNot until we develop faster than light travel. The money should go into that and preparing for that rather than spending billions on sending a few people no further than mars.

TL;DR yes.
-
Meh....... Maybe?
-

Certainly. The money we put into exploring space has almost always been met with benefit. Compare it to other spending habits that many governments go through, and it makes me further believe that it is better placed into space.

6 RepliesEdited by Y SO REACH BETA: 8/29/2013 10:12:02 PMYes. Anybody who says no doesn't fully understand the situation. It is a FACT that space exploration is beneficial to the human race as a whole.
-
Yes I think we should also since we found those planets that can probably support life since they have close to what earth has for life, and I think we could watch those planets and see how a planet runs so we can learn about our own and hopefully not destroy it too, but we may

Definitely, though currently only a very small percent is going to NASA and other space agencies around the world. I understand the fact that space travel and exploration is risky, but it would be impossible to improve our methods of extraterrestrial travel unless we build test vehicles. I doubt the original model-t was a safe car, same with the first airplanes but we still continue to use and improve both today. Space should be the same way

The amount of money we are spending on space exploration is a fraction, if not a fraction of a fraction, of our overall budget. What "cost" are we talking about?
-
Was spending all the time and money exploring the ocean worth it half a millennium ago? The chance to discover new places and new things that could change humanity is always worth it.
-
Yes every peny. We explore because we are human. For ages man has looked to the stars and wonderd. Now we can reach them were a step closer knowing whats up there.
-
Do you know how much money can be made in SPAAAAACCCCCEEEEEE....... If we as a species would just anti-up and send some new frontiersmen into the wild to reclaim what was ours in the golden age....... Wait wait that's destiny ummmmm yes it's worth it!
-
We should be researching ways to make it cheaper.
-
Certainly. Today's impossibilities in space will (given further research...and a large amount of funding) become a breeeze in the future. Be it getting minerals for circuits or buildings (Gold/Aluminium/Iron) or potential fuel sources (Hydrogen), it's all worth it in the long term. Problem is, it'll be very long term, and we're not very patient.
-
27 RepliesRight now it definitely isn't. People need to get their priorities straight. Space exploration is something that should come after a stable civilization on your home planet. It's not like when people explored the seas when they settled down. Space exploration is expensive, takes a lot of time, and is very risky.
-
Yes, it will pay off later on.
-
Hell yes!
-
In the long run it will be worth it, but I don't know how much we should be pursuing it right now.
