This is a thread where you can share videos and information about future missions and general information about the future of space exploration and aerospace.
Goodie. This is somewhat related, but I hope it doesn't go too far outside the bounds of the thread. It is also just a simple question. Does anyone here have opinions in regards to string theory or M-theory? Does anyone here lean towards one over the other? Why?

  • M theory makes some really bold assumptions. Don't think is holds a lot of validity to be honest.

I don't know if those are assumptions, as much as they are conjectures. However when it is boiled down bare, it resembles just about everything else, in that it may hold axioms, which I guess you could consider to be assumptions. Still, I'd love to see a somewhat detailed writing behind your position on it. These discussions are genuinely fun, but most of the fun is in the details, and stories.

Well for example dimensional theory. It assumes space is a curvature and that time is a curvature as well. At a certain dimension everything is perceive. It's like a singularity of the universe. I don't see why they're creating this idea of a physical dimension for time and even more but rather time could be some kind of field contained in space itself. My main issue with M theory is the proposition of multiple dimensions. It doesn't need to exist at all. There's no hole in our model of physics that leads to that. My only issue with quantum physics is that it requires you to start at a blank point in space. Unification theory is really what is needed because right now they're doing things 5 steps ahead. Physics needs work done on the relativistic model and then to be unified for any of those theories to have any consistency. I see the merit in them but some of the aspects of M theory don't really need to be there and serve no purpose than just existing. I'll have to read more to be honest.

  • I can understand not sifting through it at first due to the dimensions. Out of all of the people I've talked to about it, the ones that view it unfavorably do so because of the dimensions. Personally I try my best to view it directly from a neutral standpoint. I'll try to make the explanation for why some people support easy to read. Many people that spend their days sifting through the information trying to find any piece of evidence, or any extra information suggesting their existence may do so because they are applying model dependent realism. Using that, they can justify most of their thoughts with relative ease. Both string theory and M theory can get rid of many anomalies, though admittedly raise quite a few more questions. I suppose model dependent realism plays a large role in many minds who are in favor of it. (And to their credit, they seem to make progress with it.)

  • I'm not saying it's all useless, I do need to find better reading material, anything on wikipedia is very, very vague in it's explanation. I'll probably pick up one of Michio Kaku's books on it. I think there's definitely merit in the quantum mechanics explanation of gravity though.
