i mean people talk about showing (or not showing) others respect but what does that actually mean?
holding a door open for someone?
treating them as a person rather than just another sack of meat and blood wandering aimlessly on a rock in space?
does not punching someone in the face when they come in the room count as respect?
what about not stabbing them with a carving knife when they efuse to let you borrow a lighter?
if all these things are showing someone respect then isn't respect simply being a nice person?
and if that's true then doesn't it also follow that to not show someone respect (without a good reason) is being a pretty douchey person?
if none of those things are showing respect, then what is showing respect?
let's take an exmple. i have zero respect for McDonalds. absolutely nil. but i do have respect for Cadbury.
now what's the difference here? what am i actually saying? well, i'm saying that i hold Cadbury in higher regard than i do McDonalds. so is this respect; simply thinking one party better than another? but when you say something like "i respect Margaret Thatcher for her drive and vision" you aren't implying that no other person is worthy of respect for their drive or vision, are you? you just happen to be impressed by Margaret Thatcher's and picked her out because of that.
