As long as you don't negatively affect others why is either of those bad?

-
How are they detrimental? Bigotry is a problem, the others are just beliefs.
-
Believing that another person is inferiror because they were born different to you is a detrimental view to society. Tougher measures need to be taken in schools to stamp out bigoted beliefs.
-
That is bigotry. Homophobia and racism doesn't automatically mean you think they are inferior, just that they don't personally want to be in their company. There's a VERY big difference there.
-
If you don't want to be in someone's company because they are black, then you are making a negative judgement based solely on their skin colour. This needs to be stamped out.
-
Why does that need to be stamped out? People can believe whatever they want.
-
I know they can, which is why it hasn't been outlawed. But to deny that people hating each other because of their skin colour is detrimental to society is delusional.
-
It isn't at all detrimental if they don't harm them, though. That's my point. I could hate anyone for any reason I like, as long as I'm not stealing from them why does it matter?
-
Because racist beliefs lead to racist actions. The BNP and KKK started just some bigots with racist beliefs. Then look what happened. By 'stamp out' I don't mean send SWAT teams into homes were people are suspected of being racist. I mean more needs to be done in schools. Schools should be teaching more about racism and its consequences.
-
Who cares how whiny they get? Even when the KKK does their idiotic marches, why should we care? The moment they try to harm someone else THEN it is a problem that should be corrected. I'm not against educating against it at all, but you were starting to sound like you wanted to slowly torture racists simply because they hold beliefs different than yours, haha!
-
Haha, no because that would be stooping to their level :)

Edited by die wily: 6/27/2013 3:57:53 PMBeliefs without justification are intrinsically harmful.
-
What if their beliefs are justified to them?
-
There is no "to them." Beliefs are either rational or irrational. Racism and anti-homosexual-ism have no empirical basis or clear positive societal benefit, so they are bad things that needlessly bias people away from the true and the practical.
-
Why is that bad if they harm no one else, though? What is wrong with someone being irrational as long as they don't harm you? I hold neither of these beliefs, but I'm apathetic if someone else does.
-
Edited by die wily: 6/28/2013 1:59:36 AM'cause they can't just not-harm anyone else. people interact with and impact others through their choices and actions constantly. edit: i want to make it clear that i'm just making an ethical point, not a legal one. i wouldn't actively suppress racist writers or what have you, just as i wouldn't want to put a stop to the printing of mein kampf.
-
Of course they can, and you don't HAVE to interact with anyone.
-
if there's no one that they're interacting with then whatever, but pretty much everyone interacts with and affects other people. it is a question of degree, of course, but i don't think it's ever reduced to utterly inconsequential, just negligibly-bad.
