I never understood why the Americans just dropped a key part of the word...
I can understand Tomato being pronounced as tomayto and swapping words is normal for different dialects rubbish - trash
But... Taking a hard working british word and tearing it's right eye out seems a bit excessive.

If I remember correctly, it was originally named aluminum. It was then called aluminium to match the other elements, and then America switched back to aluminum.
