As a teacher, I can only agree to some degree. We aren't the end all be all. And as with any profession, we don't all meet the bar of quality.
It really is a tough line of work though, hardly any respect, low pay, and lots of work. The ones that love doing it are the best though, and I guess that's really the key with any line of work.
Just think back to when you were in school, how the kids treated teachers. It isn't easy to enjoy your work, and it can be hard to make yourself be the best when the only interaction you have is a negative reaction from those you are trying to help.

I remember making fun of my teacher while I was in middle school, so I can see what you mean. I went to visit my old middle school and most of my teachers that taught me still teach there. Back then, I didn't respect them for what they did. Now, I do respect them for everything they taught me.

It doesn't make the task easy, especially since it never goes away. But there is a joy to teaching that keeps us coming back, and that is what makes it all worth while.
-
Do you think it makes it much more rewarding if a former student comes to visit you, completely different in a good way?
-
Of course. It's probably the proudest moment of a teacher's life, to see the fruits of their labors.
