Do you in your own opinion believe that the company known as Game Stop at all has a slight monopoly over video games as one of the few country wide video game specialty stores still around?

8 RepliesEdited by Butane: 6/2/2013 1:19:01 AMWe need an antitrust lawyer.... FOMAN! Short answer: no. Medium answer: The SEC allowed the merger of EB and Gamestop just a few years ago. If there was anything that could of led to a monopoly, the SEC would of not of approved of it. They did without any hesitation. There is just too many alternatives to buying both new and used video games at the national, regional, and local levels that compete with Gamestop to the point where they can't control policy and prices across the whole industry. Long answer: Again, find Foman.

1 ReplyIf I recall correctly, I've seen articles claiming that WalMart, Amazon, Target, and Best Buy all sell higher volumes of video games than GameStop does. In that order (I think). GS is certainly the largest the specialty video game retailer in the world, but that's small potatoes compared to the big box stores.
-
Not in any way whatsoever, though they do sort of have a monopoly in local, cheap, used games.
-
Nope. They just specialize in that. I prefer to get my games from amazon.
-
2 RepliesI don't have Game Stop where I live. Here, it is called EB Games.
-
What's a GameStop? In all seriousness there aren't any in Britain so they definitely don't have a worldwide monopoly.
-
1 ReplyI think GameStop is kind of a last resort for some. I much rather buy my games and merchandise at somewhere like Wal-Mart. I'll only go to GameStop if I can't find a certain game elsewhere, and even then, I still have the internet.
-
6 RepliesNope. You don't need to go to specialty stores to buy games. You can hit up WalMart*, Target, Best Buy, or if you want to avoid brick and mortar stores altogether, you can order games from Amazon. Digital Distribution would be nice to see but consumers need to see benefits from those as well, cheaper launch prices and games going on sale quicker.
I won't hold my breath.
-
7 RepliesNo. For a start, they're only in the US.
-
Don't buy used games or pre-orders from GameStop.
-
Well, slightly. But when other people try to screw Gamestop over, you get screwed over as well. *cough*xboxone*cough*

12 RepliesPersonally I don't like GameStop; when I trade in good things( halo, rage, ect) I get squat!
-
1 ReplyJust because they are the only video game store doesn't mean they have a monopoly on it. You can get games everywhere. No they are not even close to a monopoly.
-
1 ReplyMonopoly? No. There are other stores to get video games. Department stores have an electronics department. Best Buy specifically has a much better video game department than any department store would have and they even have midnight releases for the really big titles. Gamestop is providing the best service and value around.

There's no GameStop in the Philippines, only data blitz
-
When I purchase physical discs I buy from Amazon and Newegg much more often. I'll only go to the local gamestop for preorders.
-
1 ReplyThey have a lot of sway, but so does Wal-Mart. Amazon is also rising in prominence with gaming by providing release day delivery and getting their own exclusives.
-
3 Repliesno way, I will never shop at Gamestop again after they sold me a display case as a new game. Amazon is leagues ahead
-
3 RepliesI don't know. I chose to no longer sell anything back several years ago, and I don't go to GameStop unless I'm in the vicinity ('cause I do like to browse around the shop, but for picking up a new release it's easier for me to go to the store a couple miles away). There used to be a competitor chain in my state (GameCrazy), but it's partner company (or whatever), a video store, closed down and so did it.
-
They don't have a monopoly over video games... GameStop's one advantage is they often time partner with a publisher to run advertisements.
-
GAME is a more prominent game shop where I live.

Could any more input be given i'd like more testimony.
