Entrances can be shot open easily. While security guards are effective, most schools do not have enough money to effectively manage their school. I know our district High School has about 5-7 security guards. While maintaining building safety, they also have to monitor the two - three parking lots, do lunch monitoring, and help to check the Middle School. Meaning, that usually leaves only 1, MAYBE 2, men at the entrance.
-
You can't shoot open entrances without getting injured by shrapnel and there's no reason for a door to even open if damaged.
-
Really? First. You think the shooter is going to be a foot away? No - you'll stand back far enough so when you shoot, the glass crumbles without shrapnel. Second, yes the door can. Most school entrances are doors that have the push mechanism in the middle. Push from the inside to open. So - shoot the glass down. Press the bar down. Wham! Opening
-
Glass door or metal door? And which part of the door is being shot at? An electronic lock won't work the same way as a mechanical one when shot.
-
That is the standard door for a school. Shooting anywhere in the glass section would easily give gunmen entrance.
-
The point is school security, so wouldn't doors be swapped out for more ideal ones as part of the plan?
-
No, because again, more advanced, protective doors (Such as ones with Bulletproof Glass, or different protection mechanisms) cost more money that schools don't really have - including refitting needs. Whereas the glass covering in my idea costs far less for great protection

Metal detectors wont work. Too many students. If a student tripped the detector they would have to go back and remove items until they could pass without setting it off airport-style. With potentially 2,000+ students with cell phones it would about 4 hours for all students to be cleared. I dont see how a push button would make anything better.

Edited by An Eagle Flying A Blimp: 5/30/2013 10:25:04 PMThe only people in the building are people that have permission to enter. My own school does this... I've waited 15 minutes in the snow for the person to get back from the bathroom and let me in before.

And this person does a complete search of you before letting you enter?
