It's so God damn easy I don't get why no one thought of this yet. I posted this earlier a few months back but I think it was ignored. Before you start flaming me for my warped view of reality, at least read the whole thing
Give Civil Unions the same benefits as Marriage, and let Heterosexual couples be allowed to have Civil Unions. That would eliminate any "Separate but Equal" bullshit out of the water. But wait, there's more! Legalize Gay Marriage across the country, but let individual churches choose whether or not to accept the marriages. If Gay couples really wanted marriage they should have no problem finding a small local church to hold their wedding, and if they cant find a church to approve of it, there is always a Government equivalent with the same benefits.
Bam! Boom! Solved. Where's my medal?

4 Replies in this Sub-ThreadI don't know if anyone's said it yet, but I can't keep a straight face when someone talks about protecting the "sanctity of marriage" while completely disregarding the 53% divorce rate in America.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that anybody claiming to be married would not be legally recognised as married, because there would be no marriage under the law. Is that right?

Edited by Gaara444: 5/28/2013 4:03:02 PMIt would start out as a way of appeasing everybody. The Government Civil Unions would only initially say that all couples would be considered married couples, but overtime I would gradually begin to cut benefits to marriage, and then I would cut the title of being Married from Civil Unions all together, but by then all the benefits would be given to Civil Unions.
But why would you do that?
Cause as I said earlier, I want the Government out of marriage. The only way to do that it would seem is to slowly cut it's grasp on it while maintaining a viable alternative, in this case Civil Unions. If you want to get Married, you shouldn't need the Government to get involved with it. I'm not trying to destroy Marriage altogether, I'm trying to save it from the problems that have arisen from Government Involvement in it. These benefits have created cheaters of the system that simply want to reap the rewards easily. If the Government wants to get involved they should do so in their own programs, but not let ones they didn't create fall apart because of it.
